Born in 1897, Amelia Earhart was a famous pilot from Kansas, US. Many people heard of her name because of a mystery. She disappeared while trying to fly around the world in 1937. But before she disappeared, the pilot already made history.
Earhart took her first flying lesson in 1921. She saved up money and bought her first plane that same year. Earhart broke her first flying record in that plane in 1922. She became the first woman to fly to a height of 14,000 feet above the sea alone! In 1928, Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She also completed the first successful flight from Hawaii to California alone in 1935. And now, a statue (雕像) in her honor is standing in Washington, D.C.!
Leaders of the government showed the statue to the public on July 27, 2022. It stands 7 feet tall in the National Statuary Hall Collection. It is the collection's 11th statue of a woman. “I am really excited,” said Sharice Davids, a leader from Kansas. “So many people are going to be inspired by Amelia Earhart. She is a true hero.”
Earhart earned (赢得) her way into the collection. As a kid, young Earhart was interested in stories about successful women. And as she grew up, Earhart made great efforts to fight for equality (平等) between men and women.
