Exercise 7
Purpose: to help students write wh-questions using cues
· Revise wh-words with students. Ask " What wh-word do we ask when we want to know about a place?" Write a place on the board. Elicit where and write it on the board next to a place. Continue by asking about a time (when ) and an action or thing (what). Write these on the board.
· Direct students to the sentences. Point out the underlined phrase in sentence 1. Ask " Does this describe a place, time or action?" Elicit a time. Then say " Write wh-questions about the underlined words". Monitor, offering help as needed. Direct students to the wh-words on the board if necessary. You may have students work in pairs if they need support.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students to read the questions aloud. Have another student answer using the underlined information. Check students' pronunciation of the Key Words.

Note: Use this activity with more proficient students. Have students brainstorm more yes / no and wh-questions to ask Tina and James, for example, When did you begin learning English? Why did you want to learn Chinese? Who was your favourite teacher? Why? What did you do after class to help to learn Chinese? Then have students, in groups of three, take turns role-playing Tina, James and the inter-viewer, asking and answering questions.
