Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students know menu items
· Direct students to the photos on the menu. Ask " What's this?" If necessary, show students the word Menu at the top. Ask "Where do you see a menu?" Elicit or provide at a restaurant. If necessary, indicate the title of the lesson. Then ask " Do you know any of the items on the menu?" Have students say aloud the names of the items they know. They should be able to identify juice and milk, from the Getting Ready page. See if your students know any of the other menu items. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to the menu. Say "Complete the menu with the Key Words". Monitor as students complete the menu, offering help as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs. You may also use the Picture Dictionary on page 115, Food and Drink, to teach the Key Words.
· Read the Key Words aloud, having students repeat after you. After you have read the Key Words aloud, write the words healthy and unhealthy on the board. To teach meaning, ask "Which menu items do you think are healthy?" Elicit or provide an appropriate response, for example, sandwiches * , salad, soup, tea, orange juice and milk are healthy. Then ask " Which food do you think is unhealthy?" Elicit or provide an appropriate response, for example, hamburgers hot dogs*, coffee, chocolate cake and ice cream are unhealthy. To check comprehension, ask students to suggest other food that is healthy, for example, fruits and vegetables. ( * Point out that countable nouns are plural when we speak of them in general, as in this context.)
· Ask “ How much is the chocolate cake?” Elicit The chocolate cake is $1. 29. Then have students get into pairs. Say "Ask and answer questions about the menu" . Monitor as stud
