外刊阅读 ▶ “答案与解析”见P7 未能破译的纳瓦霍语密码 It was August 7,1942, in the middle of World War Ⅱ. A huge battle(战斗) was going on on Guadalcanal Island in the Pacific Ocean. Hidden in the wet forest, two Japanese soldiers watched American soldiers roling(滚动) out the wire(电线) from one battle patrol(巡逻队) to the next. The wire would carry telephone signals, alowing different units to talk to each other and to the base command(指挥部). In the distance, gunfire sounded and bombs blasted. When the Americans were gone, the Japanese soldiers came out quietly and put headphones onto the newly laid line to hear something. Both spoke English. They hoped to know what the Americans were planning. The first Japanese soldier listened. A look of surprise crossed his face. He heard a sing-song mumble and some strange gurgles and clicks. The second soldier also listened. It was like nothing they􀆳d ever heard before. Did the Americans have some new kind of voice code(暗码)? After listening for a while, they gave up and returned to their army. What did they hear? Two soldiers from the Navajo were talking in their native language. These special soldiers had the job of sending secret messages over the radio and telephone by translating them into Navajo and then back into English at the other end. They were known as the code talkers. Native American code talkers let the American forces share orders and information quickly and secretly in the heat of battle.
