Exercise 5
Purpose: to help students choose the correct form of the simple past tense
· Direct students to the table. Say“Look at the table. What's the verb tense?”Elicit or provide simple past tense. Ask“Which question is a wh-question?”Elicit the second question. Then ask " Which question is a yes / no ques-tion?" Elicit the first one. Say“Now circle the correct words”. Monitor as students circle the words, offering help as needed.
· Go over the answers. Have individual students read the sentences aloud.

· Write enjoy on the board. Ask“How do we form the simple past tense with regular verbs?”Elicit or provide We add -d or -ed to the base form. Elicit a few regular verbs. If necessary, replay the interview. Students may produce learned, liked, studied, etc. Go over spelling rules for regular verbs (for example, change the y to an i and add -ed; if the verb ends in e, just add d). Then elicit a few irregular verbs, for example, came, knew, read, etc. Ask“Is enjoy a regular or irregular verb?”Elicit regular and write ed after enjoy. Then ask“How do we form a question in the simple past tense?”Elicit or provide with the helping verb did. Ask "How do we form short answers?" Elicit or provide We use did or didn't. Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students form past tense yes / no questions based on information from a listening
· Direct students to the phrases. Say“Make yes / no questions about James”. If necessary, do the first one together. Challenge students to form the questions without writing them down. However, if students need support, have them work in pairs to write the questions. Go over the questions first, before having students ask an
