calm   v. 使镇定

★entitle       vt. 以……为名,

(1)    v. 给（书，剧本等）定名

= to give a book, a play etc. a title

entitle + 宾语 + sth.     给……题名为……

eg. He entitled the book “Crime and Punishment”.

他把这本书取名为“罪与罚”。

(2)    v. 授权

  = to give the right to, authorize

eg. This ticket entitles you to a free seat at the concert.

这张票可让你免费听音乐会。

be entitled to do sth.      有权做某事

eg. Officers are entitled to travel first class.

    官员有权做头等舱。

 

★ calm     v. 使镇定

(1)    v. 使平静

eg. The mother calmed her child.

妈妈让孩子平静下来。

(2)    adj. 无风的，平静的

eg. After the storm it was calm.

暴风雨后，天气趋于平静。

(3)    adj. 水波不兴的，平静的

eg. The sea was calm.

     海面是平静的。

(4)    adj. (情绪）不激动的，安静的

eg. Even after her husband died, she was calm.

    就算丈夫去世了，她还是很平静。

                                                                    calm down    

(1)    变平静

eg. The excited girl quickly calmed down.

这个兴奋的女孩子很快平静下来。

(2)    使（生物）平静

eg. I’ll go and calm the excited dogs down.

我去让那只兴奋的狗平静下来。

I’ll go and calm your angry brother down.

我去让你生气的弟弟平静下来。

   

★nerve     n. 神经

(2)    n. [u] 意志力，勇气

eg. a man of nerve               勇敢的人

lose one's nerve             失去勇气

a test of nerve              意志力的考验

touch a nerve                触到伤心或敏感的话题

 =  hit a nerve

 (3) (贬义）大胆，鲁莽，冒失

eg. What a nerve!                他真厚颜无耻！        

    Some nerve!                  冒失鬼！

                                                                    nerve-racking     adj. 令人紧张的，令人头痛的

                                                                    nervous           adj. 神经紧张的

eg. get on someone’s nerves      令人心神不安

I can’t study with that loud music getting on my nervous.

音乐声那么大，让我心神不安无法学习。
