Du Fu’s spirit of benefiting the people lives on(游学)
In June of this year, I joined a learning tour in Chengdu, Sichuan province. Among our many activities, the greatest one for me was visiting the Du Fu Thatched Cottage.
The thatched cottage was the home of Du Fu, 1_____ great poet of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), when he lived in Chengdu. Du went to Chengdu 2__________(escape) the An Lushan Rebellion (安史之乱). The thatched cottage (茅草屋)showed quiet with simple buildings and beautiful gardens. Bamboo was growing throughout the courtyard, 3__________(give) it a quaint (古朴的) charm.
It was in this thatched cottage 4______ Du wrote the famous poem My Cottage Unroofed by Autumn Gales (《茅屋为秋风所破歌》). 5__________ I had learned from my textbooks about Du’s poor and hard life, I was still touched when I saw the cottage in an old and bad condition.
Great poets are often considered great 6_________ their pain and happiness are related to society and history. Even in such hard times, Du did not think about 7________(he). He still cared for the country and the people, as expressed in the line, “If I could get a mansion with a thousand, ten-thousand rooms; I’d house all the poor scholars and make them beam with smiles (安得广厦千万间,大庇天下寒士俱欢颜).” His broad-mindedness (宽广胸怀) makes me admire him.
This trip made me realize that 8_________(learn) these poems and knowledge only from textbooks is not enough. When I 9_____(see) the thatched cottage and 10________(hear) the ancient songs in the cottage, I had a deeper touch of the world of the poet-sage (诗圣) and admired his noble (崇高的) spirit of benefiting the people.
