Many high school students think that studying abroad is for college students. But in recent years, more and more Chinese teenagers have chosen to do so[1]. Students from China make up about 42% of the international students at high schools in the United States, according to the latest study by the Institute of International Education. The number of international students at US high schools doubled (加倍) from 2004 to 2016, reaching 81,981. So what makes Chinese high school students interested in studying abroad? What is life abroad like?

Guo Xue, a girl, 16, Moreau Catholic High School in San Francisco, California, US
In the future, I want to go to college in the US. Studying in the high school here will help me get used to college life in the future. Also, I want to improve my English. Studying here is not easy. Unlike in China, we don’t have so many exams here. Instead, we often have projects (项目) in class. For example, in World History class, we have to make a PPT about a famous person in history and then create a picture for that person.

Qi Jun, a boy, 16, Unionville High School in Toronto, Canada
For me, experience matters. It’s good to have the experience of living in another country. Unlike other international students, my parents are here with me, so that they will not worry about me[2]. In Canada, I have more time to develop my interests and I can choose classes I like. However, it’s a shame that I miss the complete education in China for basic (基础的) science. Also, taking the entrance examinations (入学考试) to high school and college at home would be great. But here I have no choice to do that.
