Microbes that can digest plastics (1)
low temperatures have been
discovered by scientists in the Alps and the Arctic, which could be
(2)valuable tool in recycling. Many microorganisms that can do this have
already been found, but they can usually only work at temperatures above 30C(86F).
This means that using them in industrial practice is prohibitively
(3)(expense)because of the heating required. It also means
(4)
(use)them is not carbon neutral.Scientists from the Swiss Federal
Institute WSL have found microbes that can do this at 15C.(5)could lead to a
breakthrough in microbial recyeling.Their findings have been published in the
journal Frontiers in Microbiology.Dr Joel Ruthi from WSL (6)colleagues
sampled 19 strains of bacteria and 15 of fungi growing on free-lying or
intentionally (7)(bury)plastic kept in the ground for one year in Greenland,
Svalbard and Switzerland. They let the microbes grow as
single-strain(8)(culture)in the laboratory in darkness at 15C (9)
tested
them to see(10)
they could digest different types of plastic.

The Australian government will ban e-cigarettes through a heavy set of controls on
imports(1)packaging to discourage vaping,especially among teens,under its
biggest smoking reforms in more than a decade.Australian Health Minister Mark
Butler on May 2 said vaping has become a top behavioral issue in high schools and
a(2)(grow)problem in elementary schools but recognized the products have
a therapeutic use under the right(3)(circumstance).Vaping involves heating a

the user.It is(5)(wide)seen as an alternative to smoking cigarettes and a
