His great voyages not only allowed China to trade with western countries but also encouraged the exchange of cultures and technologies and helped the development of the countries and regions he travelled to. Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, lived during the 15th century. He believed he could reach Asia by sailing westward.
