Running a marathon is not easy. It takes hard work, practice, and patience. To run a marathon, you have to run 26.2 miles on foot! 26.2 miles is the same as running the length of a football field more than 460 times. It takes most people four or five hours to finish. In 2013, the world’s fastest marathon runner finished the race in 2:03:23. Imagine running for over two hours without a break!
By the age of 30, Lea Tambellini had run more than five marathons and had no plans to stop. She had always been an athlete. When she was 14 in high school, she was on her school’s swim team and began to train for the relay race. Her mum and dad ran marathons, and when she was 22, they helped her train for her first marathon.
Lea’s first marathon took place in Ohio, which was called “The Flying Pig”. “I was very nervous,” she said, “but I had my mum there, so that helped.”
Running the race was hard, but the hardest part was when she ran past a cookie factory and smelled cookies at mile 18. “I just wanted to be done,” she said. “I was spent, but my mum kept me going. It was already her 15th marathon.
The word “marathon” comes from a Greek legend. In the legend, a brave soldier ran all the way from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens, Greece to tell everyone the Greeks had won the battle against the Persians (波斯人). It is said that he ran the entire way without stopping —— a distance equal to a modern marathon.
Today, a number of people run marathons every year. Runners train for months to get ready. To prepare for one of the marathons, Lea ran four to five times every week. On weekdays, she completed shorter runs, five or six miles at most. But at weekends she ran long distances ——13 miles, 15 miles, and 20 miles!
“I don’t mind training because I get excited about working towards something. And I love running with a group of friends and working towards the goal together. But it does take a lot of time.”
Running a marathon is a great achievement. “It’s a great feeling of accomplishment and nothing feels as wonderful as reaching my goal when I cross the finish line,” Lea explained. “I can’t wait for the next one!”
( ) 26. How does the writer introduce the topic of this passage?
A. By listing facts. B. By telling stories. C. By giving examples. D. By raising questions.
( ) 27. What does the underlined word “spent” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Happy. B. Tired. C. Nervous. D. Proud.
( ) 28. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Lea’s parents hadn't run a marathon before her first race.
B. Lea started training for marathons when she was 14 years old.
C. Lea’s weekend training runs were longer than her weekday runs.
D. The name “marathon” comes from a story about a Persian soldier.
( ) 29. What can we infer from Lea's words about training?
A. She finds training boring and lonely.
B. She values teamwork and shared goals.
C. She thinks training takes her too much time.
D. She prefers running towards something when training.

Seventeen heads are kept in Copenhagen, Denmark. The heads are over one meter tall and are waiting for their bodies. They are the work of Danish artist Thomas Dambo. Dambo creates huge trolls (巨怪) from “trash (废物) wood” - wood that he finds on the ground or that people don’t want anymore.
When they are completed, Dambo puts the trolls outside in green spaces. One project—— The Great Troll Folk Fest —— included five-to seven-meter-tall trolls placed in parks around Denmark. Since 2014, Dambo has put trolls in other green spaces around the world, such as South Korea, China, Puerto Rico, France, and the United States.
Dambo uses trash wood he finds in each place to make the trolls. For a project in Culebra, Puerto Rico, Dambo recycled plywood that had covered windows during a hurricane (飓风). To make the troll's hair for The Great Troll Folk Fest in Denmark, he used fallen branches and twigs from local forests.
Dambo’s work has a purpose: He wants the trolls to connect us to nature. Because they are often hidden in parks, you have to walk among the trees to see them. During The Great Troll Folk Fest, Dambo gave clues (提示) about where each troll was online. “It’s kind of a treasure hunt for families,” Dambo says. “Once you find a troll, you can play with it. For example, one troll has an open mouth for you to climb through.”
Using trash wood to connect people with nature sends a message. Dambo hopes that people think twice about doing things that damage the environment. “If we throw the world out,” says Dambo, “then we’ll have a world with no mountains, no woods, and no places where we might find trolls.”
( ) 30. The writer mentions the projects in Puerto Rico and Denmark to ________.
A. compare the different sizes of the trolls
B. show the artist uses things he finds in each place
C. explain why the trolls are so popular in these places
D. list the most expensive troll projects the artist has done

A. To protect the trolls from sun damage.
B. To encourage people to explore the natural world.
C. Because there is not enough room in art museums.
D. Because the trolls are too big to be moved to the city.
( ) 32. Why are the trolls called a “treasure hunt” for families?
A. Families can dig to find hidden trolls. B. Families can sell the trolls for money.
C. Families need to follow clues to find them. D. Families can find real treasure near the trolls.
( ) 33. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Fun trolls made from trash B. Famous parks with giant trolls
C. How to make trolls from wood D. A Danish artist’s environmental art

International Women’s Day is on 8 March every year. On this day, people celebrate the achievements of women all over the world and continue to fight for basic rights (权利) for women
How did it start?
In 1908, women in New York City wanted the right to vote. They also hoped to acquire (得到) shorter working hours and better pay. Then, in 1910 in Denmark, a woman called Clara Zetkin had the idea for an international day for women. The first International Women's Day happened the next year.

China’s national earthquake early warning system, the world’s largest one, has given warnings of more than 100 earthquakes since its completion, according to the China Earthquake Administration.
In an interview, the administration said the system can provide warnings in about six to seven seconds after an earthquake hits key areas such as North China, the country's southeastern coast and Lhasa, while other regions receive warnings within 10 to 20 seconds.
The National Earthquake Intensity Rapid Reporting and Early Warning Project entered full operation in July last year, offering public earthquake warnings nationwide. Until now, the service has covered more than 148 million users on all channels, the administration said.
The administration noted that over 70,000 earthquake warning service terminals (终端) have been put nationwide, a 483 percent increase from 12,000 last July. In some places such as Yunnan, Fujian and Ningxia, more than 90 percent of primary and secondary schools have these terminals. “This development means more people across China can receive warnings from the world’s largest earthquake early warning network,” the administration said.
After a 4.7 magnitude quake in Ningxia in January, the system immediately sent warnings to hundreds of thousands of people near the epicenter (震中). “This effectively made those people less frightened and received high recognition (认可) from them,” the administration said.
After receiving a warning about the Yinchuan quake, the local railway operator carried out emergency controls on high-speed rail lines, avoiding potential risks. The system also provides special warning services to large state-owned and foreign companies to help ensure safety within industrial and supply chains.
“Now the level of scientific understanding and prediction capabilities (预测能力) for earthquakes still cannot meet the public’s need for earthquake safety,” the administration said. It added that it would explore AI technologies and build large Al models to support earthquake prediction.
( ) 37. What is mentioned about the system in Paragraph 2?
A. It took a long time to complete it.
B. It responded faster in some places.
C. It worked better in North China than in Lhasa.
D. It gave warnings of 100 earthquakes in a year.
( ) 38. What do the numbers in the third and fourth paragraphs show us?
A. The warning system has been widely used.
B. It costs a lot to use the warning service terminals.
C. Schools are in greater need of the warning system.
D. Earthquakes have happened more often in the past year.
( ) 39. What did people near the epicenter of the Ningxia quake think of the system?
A. It can be trusted. B. It may not work. C. It is known to few. D. It is difficult to afford.
( ) 40. What is the administration’s next plan?
A. To help other countries develop the system.
B. To open up foreign markets as soon as possible.
C. To improve the technologies within the system.
D. To solve all the problems the system has brought.

Good morning, teachers and fellow students! I’m Li Hua, president of the Student Union. It’s my pleasure to launch our “School Plant Care Team” project today, which is a journey where we’ll care for our green friends and grow together.
As team members, we’ll first check the school plants regularly. To keep them healthy, we can use natural ways to keep away harmful insects. This will not only protect plants but also teach us to be kind to nature.
What’s more, we plan to build health records for each plant. These records will let students in science classes study them as living examples. To make everyone take part in this meaningful effort, we’ll hold small meetings to share what we learn.
We believe that through this project, everyone will understand how small acts of care can make our school more beautiful. Let’s start now. Together, we can turn our school into a greener, happier home. Thank you!
