On January 8, a big fire called the Sunset Fire burned close to many homes in Hollywood Hills. Vince Brocato and his wife, Candice, were very worried. They had lived in their house for more than 30 years. On that day, they were not at home, but they watched the fire using their security camera (安全摄像头).
Suddenly, they saw a stranger appear on their property (房产). Just before that, they had used the camera to scare away someone who they thought might try to steal things. So when they saw this new man, Vince spoke through the camera, “Hello, can I help you?”
The man’s answer left them stunned.
“Yeah, your house is on fire. A firefighter and I have just stopped it!” he shouted.
There were no fire trucks around. The man and one firefighter had acted quickly. They couldn’t go into the patio (内院) because of a locked gate. But they didn’t give up. They found a garden hose (水管)and used it to fight the fire. It wasn’t easy, but it worked. They stopped the fire from burning the house down.
“If our house had gone, the neighborhood would have gone,” Candice said, realizing the full weight of the heroes’ actions.
When the couple came back home, they saw their deck was damaged. The wood was black, and some parts had melted. But the house was still there, thanks to the brave man and the firefighter.
They still don’t know who the man and the firefighter are. But one thing is clear: two very brave people helped save not just their home, but maybe the whole neighborhood. Who are they? That’s still a mystery.

A healthy meal can make us feel better, but it’s not just about what we eat-when we eat matters too! A new study showed that people who eat their meals during the day feel happier than those who eat at night.
In Boston, Massachusetts, US, researchers wanted to find out more. They had 19 volunteers-12 men and 7 women-join an experiment. They divided the volunteers into two groups. One group ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner only when the Sun was up. The other group ate their meals at different times, even at night. The experiment lasted four days. Each day, the volunteers shared how they were feeling on a computer. Then the researchers compared the results and noticed a difference.
The group that ate meals at night reported feeling more depressed (沮丧的) and nervous. But that wasn’t true for the group that only ate during the day. They didn’t report any of those bad feelings.
Frank Scheer and Sarah Chellappa were the scientists behind the study. “Meal timing is important for physical health,” they said. They said that their work helps to show how it influences mental health too. “Our study is one of the very first studies to show that the timing of meals influences our mood (心情),” they added.
Many studies show that natural light and exercise can improve our mental health. “Our study suggests that daytime eating can also help,” Scheer and Chellappa pointed out.
Mental health is important for everyone. Scientists have found that our mental well-being is closely linked (连接)to how we live our daily lives. “We can’t work well when we don’t feel good,” said the scientists. This means that if we’re not in a good mental state, it's tough to do our best at school or at home. So, it’s important to make good choices that will help us feel and think better. Scheer and Chellappa said that from this study, the lesson to be learnt is: It’s probably best not to eat late into the night.

A. The goal of the new study. B. The process of the new study.

( ) 32. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The study. B. The group. C. Meal timing D. Physical health.

At least 14 million tons of plastic waste are washed out to sea every year. As they break down into tiny plastics, they harm sea life and worsen environmental pollution. Jellyfish (水母) populations are rapidly increasing due to overfishing and other human activities, which harms the ocean ecosystem.
“We came up with the brave idea of solving both problems at the same time, using one to solve the other,” says Jamileh Javidpour, associate professor at the University of Southern Denmark.
This idea is GoJelly: an EU-funded project designed to collect the mucus (黏液) produced by jellyfish to create filters (过滤器) removing tiny plastics from wastewater before it reaches the sea.
Under stress, jellyfish produce mucus which forms layers (层) over their surface. "This mucus acts like a net, trapping and filtering tiny plastics,” Javidpour explains.
To build the filters, researchers need to catch jellyfish and collect the mucus they produce. The collected mucus is processed and put into a cylinder-shaped (圆柱形) filter where the processed mucus layer is held in place by a layer of sand.
Tiny plastics find their way into wastewater in a number of ways. While wastewater treatment plants can remove big pieces of plastic, they have trouble removing tiny pieces.
“Lab-based tests showed that jellyfish mucus is great for this job, working almost perfectly to trap the tiny plastics,” Javidpour notes.
To use the filters effectively over a wide area, a big solution is needed to collect large numbers of jellyfish. This was one of the project’s major challenges.
Since the filters only make use of the jellyfish mucus, the GoJelly project also developed great ideas of turning the rest of the jellyfish into useful products. “Jellyfish can be processed into many products, such as human food and fish feed,” Javidpour says.
To help European customers warm to the idea of jellyfish as an up-and-coming seafood, the project team worked with experts to produce a jellyfish cookbook.
( ) 37. What is the main purpose of the Golelly project?
A. To reduce overfishing. B. To create new jellyfish species.
C. To filter tiny plastics from wastewater. D. To protect jellyfish from human activities.
( ) 38. What did the researchers mainly focus on about the jellyfish?
A. Their shapes. B. Their mucus. C.Their populations. D. Their living conditions.
( ) 39. What is one of the major challenges faced by the GoJelly project?
A. Collecting enough jellyfish. B. Raising enough money for research.
C. Finding a suitable area for further testing. D. Selling its jellyfish products over a larger area.
( ) 40. Why did the project produce a jellyfish cookbook?
A. To introduce a new healthy food to people. B. To make use of the rest of the jellyfish.
C. To solve the problem of food shortage. D. To tell people to protect the sea.
第二节 阅读填空 阅读短文及文后A~E选项,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
At dawn, garbage trucks begin arriving at a waste-to-energy plant(工厂) in Chongqing. (41)_________ The plant burns the trash and turns the energy into electricity. This is part of Chongqing’s plan to build a “zero-waste city”.
“In the past, Chongqing mostly buried (埋藏) trash in the ground. That hurt the land, underground water, and air,” said Liu Changfeng, who runs the plant. “Now, we deal with all household trash in a way that’s good for the environment.”
Every day, the plant processes 4,500 metric tons of trash. (42)_________ This electricity is enough for more than 100,000 homes. Since 2014, it’s helped reduce 3.52 million tons of carbon emissions (排放).
According to Liu, the waste is left to ferment (发酵) for 5 to 7 days. The liquid from this process, after cleaning, can be used to water flowers or wash roads. Then, the waste is burned at over 850°C. (43)_________ The heat from burning warms water into steam, which helps to make electricity.
After burning, the smoke is cleaned to remove harmful gases. Workers take out metals. The ash (灰) is reused, too. (44)_________
“Chongqing hasn’t buried any trash in recent years,” Liu said. “The government buys all the electricity made here and gives support. (45)_________”
By 2027, Chongqing plans to keep zero landfills for household trash, use over 75 percent of industrial waste, and bury less harmful waste.
A. This keeps the plant running well.
B. It can be used to build roads or make bricks.
C. Every day, about 300 trucks bring trash here.
D. The high heat stops dangerous gases from forming.
E. It produces 2.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity.

范文
Hello, everyone. Let me share a special holiday experience with you. This May Day holiday, I worked in my grandpa’s vegetable garden. First, I helped my grandpa pick some green onions. It wasn’t easy because I had to pull them out carefully and clean off the dirt. After that, I watered the vegetables. The cool water made them look more lively. Although I was tired after finishing all the work, I felt really happy to see the tidy garden and the fresh vegetables.
This experience was special because I learnt how much work it takes to grow vegetables, and it also allowed me to get close to nature and take a break from screens.
That’s all. Thanks for your listening.
