You scan a QR code(扫二维码) to order a meal, but it asks for your phone number. You book a taxi online, and you need to fill in your address. You go back home and are asked to show the camera your face. Data collection is everywhere.
However, companies can use the personal information they collect for marketing or telecommunication fraud(电信诈骗). Researchers did a survey of 5,458 people on personal information leak(泄露) in 2021. About 85 percent of people said they had experienced leaks from their smartphones. Most said they got unwanted calls or text messages.
To deal with such problems, on Nov. 1, 2021, the Personal Information Protection Law came into effect in China. It is the first law on personal data protection. Some kinds of personal information are regarded as “sensitive”(敏感的). They include fingerprints, faces, medical health, financial accounts(金融账户) and so on.
According to the law, collecting, using and keeping personal information will be strictly managed. One key rule is that users should know and agree with giving away their personal information.
