A 16-year-old Chinese Climbed to the Peak of Mount Qomolangma①
16岁中国女孩“媛梦”珠峰
16-year-old Chinese high-school student Xu Zhuoyuan from Changsha, capital of Hunan Province, successfully climbed to the peak of Mount Qomolangma on May 15, 2023, setting a record of the youngest female athlete in China to reach the top of the world from the south slope.
Despite facing difficult conditions, Xu Zhuoyuan and her team persevered and climbed onwards, eventually reaching the peak. Xu Zhuoyuan expressed her gratitude to her team members and the coaches who supported her during the journey.
The success of Xu Zhuoyuan’s climb is due to her background and preparation. Her parents, former mountaineers themselves, had a major role in her future success. Her father, Xu Jianglei, was once hailed as the “king of Chinese mountaineers,” being one of the few Chinese climbers to have reached the peak of Qomolangma several times. He gave her tips and guidance along the way.
Xu Zhuoyuan’s preparation for this climb began from a young age. She started climbing small hills near her home before moving onto larger mountains as she grew older and more experienced. Her team began training for the climb six months ahead of time, which included rock climbing, physical exercises and mental preparations. The challenging training routine prepared her for the mental and physical demands of the climb.
Xu Zhuoyuan’s climb to the top of Mount Qomolangma is not her first achievement in the climbing world. Last year, she reached the top of Muztagh Ata②, whose peak is more than 7, 500 meters, laying the foundation for challenging Mount Qomolangma.
“Humans are insignificant in front of nature. We must respect nature,” said the girl. She said she wants to continue to climb mountains and accomplish her goal of reaching seven peaks as well as north and south poles.
