Previous research on this topic had been hindered by small sample sizes and non-diverse groups of participants, as well as issues with self-defined musical tastes. However, the new study recruited 22,252 participants from diverse backgrounds around the world via the internet. Participants were presented with 25 clips of music that had not been publicly released but had been reviewed by expert musicologists, and also took a standard personality test. The five main components of personality (openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) were all shown to have some correlation with musical taste, except for conscientiousness. Those who scored high in openness were found to appreciate “sophisticated” music that was inspiring, complex, and dynamic, while disliking “mellow” and “contemporary” music genres. Extroverts showed a preference for “unpretentious” music that was uncomplicated, relaxing, and acoustic. Agreeable people rated all the music clips highly regardless of genre, and neurotic individuals did the opposite, rating everything poorly. This study is significant because it overcomes many limitations of previous research on the topic.
