(2023·江苏宿迁·校考一模)The first World Book Day was celebrated in April, 1995. The date was decided by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO)because it was the birth and death anniversary(纪念日)of William Shakespeare, a world famous writer. The date was also the death anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes, who was a great Spanish writer around the world. There are many other dates on which World Book Day takes place. The UK and Sweden celebrate World Book Day on different dates.
The idea of the day was taken from a Spanish tradition. April 23 was ever celebrated as “The Rose Day” in Spain. On this day, people used to exchange roses to show their love and support. However, in 1926, when it was Miguel de Cervantes’ death anniversary, people exchanged books instead of roses. The tradition continues to this day in Spain. That’s where the idea of World Book Day came from.
As the name suggests, the focus of the day is books and writing. Different kinds of programs are held by UNESCO to help people experience the pleasure of reading and improve reading habits. In some centuries, the printing machine appeared and it made books become available(可得到)to people. Thanks to the invention, we are able to enjoy the passages and poems of great writers and poets. World Book Day is drawing near. Go to the library or sit in the study and be a bookworm!
