China has announced a new plan to adjust approximately 20% of its university majors by 2025. The plan aims to establish majors that focus on emerging technologies and industries while eliminating those that are unfit for socioeconomic development.
The country's goal is to create about 10,000 national-level majors and 300 bases that train students in basic disciplines. It will also build schools that focus on future technology, modern industry, high-level public health, and exceptional engineering.
Currently, there are 66,000 majors offered at Chinese universities. Since 2012, 17,000 new majors have been added, while around 10,000 others have been removed or suspended. According to Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher at the National Institute of Education Sciences, some of these majors do not align with recent economic and social development efforts and have a low employment rate for graduates.
The new plan aims to prioritize practical skills that align with societal demand and multi-disciplinary knowledge. By doing so, it hopes to narrow the skill gap and prepare students for emerging industries' demands.
The plan has already generated discussion among educators and industry experts alike. Some have raised concerns over the quality and availability of technical education resources. Others argue that interdisciplinary education is essential to prepare students for a rapidly evolving job market.
Regardless of these concerns, China's effort to update its college majors reflects the government's commitment to promoting innovation and preparing young people for the future. With more adjustments and collaborations predicted to emerge in the next several years, it remains to be seen how this shift will impact China's higher education system and its wider economy.
