2023届高考英语二轮复习外刊阅读训练：体重鸿沟？ ——改编自The obesity gap Zeinab, a 60-year-old woman in Baghdad, earns 20,000 dirhams ($13.70) per day working in a restaurant but cannot afford decent food for her family. Her daughters dropped out of school due to high fees and stay home to avoid workplace harassment. The Middle East has the biggest disparity between obese men (11%) and women (15%) globally, with eight Arab countries among the 11 highest for deaths attributed to obesity due to health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Only one in ten Iraqi women have paid jobs, while fewer opportunities exist for females to enjoy sport or exercise outside their homes and headscarves make outdoor public exercise cumbersome and liable to gender-based harassment. Egypt fares worse, with poor women generally having a higher BMI than wealthier ones. Egypt also has the world's highest female BMI, which has grown more quickly than male BMI since 1975, while junk food has become more popular. Carbohydrates are also a significant problem for Iraqis, who consume rice and bread at most meals, while many Arab men prefer Rubenesque body types on women and value femininity over slimness. Iraqis often cite Enas Taleb, an actress with ample curves, as the beauty ideal, and some Iraqi women may even take weight-gaining pills to be more attractive to men. However, being overweight poses serious health risks for both males and females, particularly heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure, all prevalent conditions in the region. Despite the challenges and obstacles to expanding employment and gender equity, women should strive to live healthy, active lifestyles to improve their own well-being. 【重点词汇】 1.
