23年高考英语外刊阅读理解训练——越来越多的人对二手古着青睐有加
——改编自The rise of vintage second-hand fashion
Fashion-conscious individuals carefully choose their clothes and how they dress, with some seeking to stay on-trend by wearing the latest designer outfits. However, the trend is shifting as vintage clothing becomes a popular and often cheaper alternative. "Vintage" clothing is in fact second-hand attire that has been given a new lease of life and rebranded by the fashion industry to appear trendy.
Vintage clothing is being sold in boutique and pop-up stores, and even in supermarkets such as UK's Preloved Vintage Wholesale. Buying vintage clothing prolongs the lifespan of garments and helps reduce the environmental harm caused by producing new clothes. Moreover, it has led to retro-fashion, where younger people wear items that their parents wore decades earlier and consider fashionable again.
Online platforms like Depop and Vinted are contributing to the rise of retro-fashion by selling pre-worn clothes online. By doing so, individuals look to make choices that minimize their impact on the environment, making sustainability a priority. Another way of buying vintage clothes is in a kilo sale, whereby people pay based on weight instead of per item. Some items can also be upcycled, by using different techniques to design them creatively.
Regardless of how they are worn or designed, the sustainability of vintage fashion means that it is feasible for the foreseeable future.
