23年高考英语外刊阅读理解训练——为什么要吃早餐?
——改编自Is eating breakfast really that important?
Breakfast is often called the most important meal of the day, but is it really? The concept of breakfast comes from ‘breaking the fast’ overnight. Breakfast provides an opportunity to replenish depleted stores of nutrients like protein and calcium, which can be used by our body while we sleep.
Studies link skipping breakfast to obesity, leading many health experts to recommend a healthy meal in the morning not only to regulate but also to lose weight. A US study monitored over 50,000 people for seven years and found those who ate a healthy breakfast had a lower BMI, suggesting people may maintain a healthy weight by consuming breakfast.
However, it might not be that simple. Alexandra Johnstone, professor of appetite research at the University of Aberdeen, suggests that people who skip breakfast might be less aware of healthy diets and nutrition. Meanwhile, people who eat breakfast might have an overall healthier lifestyle, with exercise and no smoking, for example. Moreover, with the rise in popularity of intermittent fasting to lose weight, skipping breakfast could provide further benefits. Intermittent fasting can improve blood sugar control, insulin sensitivity, and lower blood pressure.
Therefore, while breakfast has benefits, it might not be the most crucial meal of the day. Rather, a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet might be more important than just one single meal.
