The beans used to produce these brews are usually disposed of as waste after they have been roasted and brewed. However, some companies are finding ways to recycle these grounds to create useful products. Max Havrylenko, founder of OCHIS, was looking for a sustainable and viable alternative to plastic when he discovered reusing coffee grounds. Havrylenko found a way to bond the grounds with vegetable oils and turn them into durable and flexible plates which are then cut into the arms and frames of sunglasses. Jeweler Rosalie McMillan mixes recycled coffee grounds with gold and silver to make handcrafted jewellery. She uses heat and pressure to create a compound called Çurface, which has similar properties to hardwood and boasts a beautiful surface quality and texture. In Germany, Kaffeeform transforms used coffee grounds and renewable plant-based raw materials into a durable composite that can be shaped into a variety of containers such as coffee cups and polished for sale. Even without a factory or recycled-ground-specific start-up, individuals can still find use for their leftover coffee grounds. These grounds can be used as fertilizer, exfoliant, or mixed with water to make sepia-toned paint. Reusing coffee grounds is a simple way to help reduce waste and promote sustainability. Despite its abundance and daily consumption, coffee does not have to contribute much if at all to the world's pollution.
