23年高考英语外刊阅读理解训练——如何专心致志
——改编自How to concentrate on something?
Staying focused can be challenging whether in school or adult life. However, understanding how to stay focused and identifying what distracts us can help. Researchers have studied procrastination and discovered ways to help keep us in the zone. One of the most effective methods is eliminating noise. Research by Science Focus magazine found that silence is best for concentration, but a gentle background hum and coffee shop ambiance are incredible! Turning off notifications on your smartphone or switching it off entirely eliminates a leading distraction and helps us concentrate on the job at hand.
Brain training could also be a possible cure for a short attention span. Psychologists and neuroscientists are interested in our ability to concentrate and have explored possibilities for improving it internally. Attention researcher Nilli Lavie from University College London has discovered that "making a task more visually demanding... takes up more processing power and leaves the brain nothing left to process distractions." Thus, keeping the mind busy can foster concentration.
Additionally, there are practical tips for keeping the mind focused, including making a list or timetable of the tasks we need to complete, finding a workspace free from temptations, and even chewing gum! Chewing gum might occupy parts of the brain typically susceptible to distraction. However, Science Focus magazine suggests that distraction isn't all negative. Distraction allows us to be aware of potential changes around us, such as threats, and is vital for survival.
