Today,Earth is home to three kinds of elephants:the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant. World Elephant Day falls on August 12 every year. It calls on people to care more about the animal.
In China, the Asian elephant is a first-class protected wild animal. The animal mainly lives in Yunnan. Thanks to China's hard work, the number of elephants in China increased to about 300 by the end of 2021. In the past 10 years, the number has risen by about 100. And the number keeps growing. How did China do this?
Elephant observers(观察员)
In Yunnan, a special system keeps an eye on elephants with the help of cameras and drones (无人机). Elephant observers are also important. They follow elephants in cars and tell people where the elephants are. They also observe the animals' health.
Dao Faxing,47,is one of the 64observers in Pu’er, Yunnan. He sees the elephants’ movements from a drone every day. Then he sends messages about the elephants to a WeChat group of local people.
Elephant observers work on the 24-hour system. Besides WeChat, people can also get messages about where the elephants are by using an app or listening to the radio.
