23 It was a tough decision to back. Bil􀆳s father, Mr.Gates Sr., drawing from his own experience as a lawyer guiding smal companies, helped Bil find Seattle business people to serve on the Microsoft board. In 1980, Bil Gates brought his father along to dinner to help persuade colege friend Steve Balmer—now Microsoft􀆳s chief executive—to quit graduate school and join Microsoft. After the windfal, Ms.Gates pressed her son to get into philanthropy.
