With lively colors and wonderful figure patterns, Lishu County's farmer paintings, dating back to the 1980s are a way for farmers of northeast China to describe their rural life. The farmer painting used to be very popular but it went downhill at the beginning of the new century. In recent years, as more and more people move to big cities, they have developed a nostalgic (怀旧的) preference for nature and rural life. This new trend is leading people's attention back to farmer paintings. Taking advantage of this change, local authorities have been actively developing the farmer painting into an industry by encouraging farmers like Qian Hongman to create farmer paintings as a way to increase their income. Qian's lessons were very well received by the farmers. Many of them have decided to learn the farmer painting from Qian, among whom is Qian's daughter Qian Lu. To Qian, the farmer painting is not only a means to make money, but also a brilliant art form deeply rooted in his hometown.
