Passage 1
主题语境:人与自然—自然灾害
Scientists study earthquakes. An earthquake happens when Earth's crust suddenly moves. (It Is moving very, very slowly all the time.) The place where the earthquake Starts is called the epicenter. The shaking of the Earth is strongest there. After a very strong earthquake, there are often small ones. These small earthquakes are called aftershocks. Strong earthquakes can do great damage to buildings, roads and bridges. Many people can be hurt. Some earthquakes are very strong. These earthquakes can be felt thousands of miles away. Strong earthquakes that occur on the bottom of the ocean can cause huge waves. These waves have so much power. When they reach the coast, they can wash away the whole towns.
Scientists study earthquakes so that they can warn people before the earthquakes happen again. There is no way of knowing exactly when earthquakes will happen. However, scientists know where they are likely to happen. They also know how many years is likely to pass between the earthquakes in an area.
Sometimes earthquakes give many warnings before they occur. The ground may rise or sink. Certain gases come out of the ground, and small earthquakes are felt. According to the warnings of the earth quakes, scientists know when to tell people “It's time to go”. These warnings have saved many lives.
