Is forcing a female employee to wear high heels workplace harassment? This is the question Japan has been struggling with over the past year, led by the activists behind #KuToo, the nation’s anti-high heels movement.
____1____It first emerged as a hashtag in January 2019 after Yumi Ishikawa tweeted about being forced to wear painful high heels at her workplace. Her initial KuToo petition (请愿书) on Change.org has obtained over 31,000 signatures since it was created in February 2019. In a nation where up to 70 percent of women wear heels at least once a week, KuToo quickly rose to become a major social media slogan and rallying cry (战斗口号) for women.
