Voiceover:
Tomorrow will be Christmas. But Della feels very sad, because she has no money to buy a present for her husband, Jim. She has only one dollar and eighty-seven cents.
In fact, Della and Jim have two things in which they both take very great pride. One is Jim’s gold watch, which has been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other is Della’s long beautiful hair.
Scene 1: At the hair shop —“Mr. Lee.”
Della: Are you Mr Lee?
Mr Lee: Yes, I am.
Della: So, will you buy my hair?
Mr Lee: Of course, I buy all kinds of hair. Sit down, please. Take your hat off and let me have a look at your hair.
(Della took off her hat.)
Mr Lee: Oh, my God! How beautiful the hair is! Are you sure, young lady?
Della:Yes, I’ve decided. Please tell me, how much they can sale?
Mr Lee: Twenty dollars, OK?
Della: Alright. But, please give it to me quickly!
Mr Lee: No problem, let me cut off your hair first. So, shall I begin?
(Della touched her hair and then closed her eyes.)
Mr Lee: (Hand out the cash.) Here you are!
Della: Thank you, Mr Lee! Thank you so much!
Voiceover: Della spent two hours in the streets. Then she stopped at a Gold Shop and bought a gold watch chain with 20 dollars.
Della: Oh, what a beautiful gold watch chain. I think it must match Jim’s gold watch. When he sees it he must be very happy.
Scene 2: At a store on Broadway.
Voiceover: Why should someone have given up something in the world? And why do this happen?
Jim: Excuse me, sir. Would you like to buy a watch?
Jumy: You? Sell a watch? Sorry, I don’t think a scrubby like you, can have how expensive things.
Jim: Sir, listen to me, please. This is a gold watch, the most valuable thing from my head to foot.
Jumy: Oh? The most valuable?
Jim: Yes, it is. It’s an ancestral watch.
Jumy: Ah, indeed gold watch, well, how much money you are ready to sell?
