A year back I received a full scholarship to attend the University of San Francisco. All of my hard work had paid off. My mom had spent a lot in my attending a private (私立的) high school, so I made sure to push myself: I volunteered, got involved in various clubs, and graduated with honors. I was so excited to start a new chapter (篇章) of my life. I had totally packed two weeks before it was time to leave.
Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn’t like what I had thought. The first two weeks were the most difficult days of my entire life. Every night I would cry myself to sleep. I was so homesick (想家的) and I didn’t know how to deal with my broken heart. To distract myself, I threw myself into my studies and I applied for a ton of jobs. In any remaining free time, I started forcing myself to the gym. I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn’t think how lonely I felt.
Soon after, I began to limit food, and then I became worse. Finally, I went to see a doctor. When the doctor weighed me, I was crazy about the number of my weight. So I continued to lower my goal, and convinced that controlling this number was the solution for my homesickness. But when I was told that I had no choice but to spend time on my studies, I quickly started recovery in my mind.
How could I do? I told myself that school was what I was best at. I decided to get rid of my homesickness and took exercise actively. My first term of college had passed by at last and I had gotten straight A’s. That’s why I want to share my story — to help other students feel less lonely.
8. How was the author during the two weeks before she left for the college?
A. She was as normal as before. B. She couldn’t wait to leave for the school.
C. She was afraid to leave her home. D. She didn’t enjoy her mother’s company.
9. What was the author’s problem at the beginning of studying in university?
A. Her weight. B. Her bad study habit.
C. Her diet. D. Her homesickness.
10. Which can best replace the underlined phrase “distract myself” in paragraph 2?
A. achieve my dream B. improve my studies
C. take my attention away D. earn money by myself
11. What is the main purpose of the author’s writing the passage?
A. To look back at her past life. B. To help girls to lose weight.
C. To increase her own confidence. D. To help lonely students.
D
With its ability to pass down complex information across many generations, human language almost certainly played a sizable part in humans’ ability to become a dominant species on the planet. Despite this, we know precious little about how human language developed. A paper published in Frontiers in Psychology proposes that we should look at ancient cave art to gain insights into how our ability for language came to be.
“Language doesn’t fossilize, but maybe in these cave drawings, we can see some of the beginnings of human beings as symbolic beings,” said Shigeru Miyagawa, MIT linguist (语言学家) professor and the paper’s lead author. Miyagawa and his co-authors propose that cave paintings exist at the intersection of communication between visual and aural (听觉的) cues.
“The linguists’ theory comes from the fact that many of the caves where art has been found are acoustic (声音的) “hot spots”. In these caves, sounds echo (发出回声) louder and more intensely as one goes deeper. Many of the drawings are located in these sections of the cave, and even some areas that would have been better for drawing on walls were ignored in favor of these spots. The drawings would then show sounds that humans made while in the caves. Think about how many examples of cave art that show various four-legged animals, including horses. The echoing of noises, be it tapping on rocks inside the cave or thunder from outside the cave, would have created sounds like horses running across the ground.
“This mix of sound and visual representation,” they write, “allowed early humans to enhance their ability to convey symbolic thinking to their fellows, as well as their ability to process aural and visual input as symbolic.” Such symbolic thinking could have led to developing other types of communication, including sentences.
Of course, this is not a declarative statement. A great deal more research is required before anything can be said in a definitive way. One thing Miyagawa does feel confident about is that it will further conversations about the importance of our art in our development as a species.
12. What does the paper published in Frontiers in Psychology focus on?
A. The origin of human beings.
B. The importance of visual communication.
C. The connection between cave art and language.
D. The determining factors of language development.
13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The significance of ancient cave drawings.
B. The theory about the formation of the caves.
C. The sites where cave drawings were discovered.
D. The evidence that supports linguists’ assumption.
14. What might the mix of sound and visual representation in cave paintings contribute to?
A. The change of human thinking.
B. The start of symbolic development.
C. The improvement in communication.
D. The increase in the variety of languages.
15. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude to the study?
A. Doubtful. B. Objective.
C. Indifferent. D. Disapproving.

I bought Jude as a tiny puppy after my previous dog died in a horrible incident. My heart was just broken and it was only having Jude that brought me back round from that pain. He was a lovely and happy pet.
For the first time in years, our whole family had gone on holiday together. It was only for four days but it meant my dog Jude was going to be looked after by someone outside the family. I was a bit nervous about it. After struggling for several days, I eventually booked him into a home boarding place in Belfast. I was worried about him the moment he was dropped off, because he had never been in kennels before.
The emotions we have gone through in the last few days have been awful. Jude was used to the comforts of a home and he had never been on his own before. Thus, I was worried about him at the bottom of my heart. Then unfortunately, the accident happened.
We went away on Monday, July 11, and he was missing on the 12th after being left in an exercise area. But it was on Thursday that I was told he had gone though I messaged the kennels every day to see how he was.
The moment we got home, we went looking for him but we didn’t know the area. My daughters Karla and Leanne took a tent and camped out to keep looking for Jude and they con-firmed a number of sightings of him. There were leaflet drops, drones put up and ground searches and posters. Social media was flooded with his photo and we got news of lots of sightings which helped. On Sunday night, my grandson Caidon who is nine, his mum Ashleigh and their dog Bonnie, went with us to the location of a reported sighting by a kind man and there Jude was.

A. Doubtful. B. Objective.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】参考范文:
As soon as Jude heard his friend Bonnie, he ran straight to him. We were so grateful and happy to see him. My eyes were filled with tears and I reached out to touch his head. He threw himself into my arms immediately and then looked up at me, as if to ask, “Where have you been? Why do you leave me?” I said over and over again, “I’m sorry, and I’ll never part from you again.” It was a very happy reunion and there were a lot of tears. A few hours later, we took him to the vet to check up.
Jude suffered an injury to his right paw (爪) and some weight loss. But he didn’t suffer major problems despite his seven day’s adventure. He had been placed in the house to rest. Jude has amazed us with his firmness. He had never spent a day or a night on his own and yet he managed to survive a few days alone. I want to tell anyone whose dog is missing, “Don’t give up because the support and kindness from kind people are unbelievable.”
