And the world would be pretty boring if we were all the same! Why Are We Scared of Different Things? Everyone feels scared sometimes, but what we’re scared of is not always the same. And as we grow and change, our fears are likely to change too. Scientists think our fears are the result of genetics, past experiences, and behaviors we learn from others. Here are a few ideas that may help you manage your fears. ☆Get more information. For example, if spiders scare you, learn about some of the cool things spiders do. Knowledge is power! ☆Try laughing. When you’re feeling nervous, laughing can make you relax and help you remember everything will be OK. ☆Talk with people you believe in. They might have some good ideas, and you will feel better after sharing your worries. 16. Which is the most common fear according to the material? A. Spiders. B. Heights. C. The dark. D. Small spaces. 17. What shall we do to manage our fears? A. Get more knowledge about them. B. Shout as loudly as you can. C. Stop talking about your worries. D. Try to forget all of them. 18. In which part of a magazine may you read the text? A. Great to Be Yourself B. Fantastic Inventions C. Funny but True Facts D. Amazing Problems B It all began with an egg. When Jane Goodall was a little girl, she often visited her grandmother at the family farm. One of her jobs was to collect eggs from the hens. As the days passed, she became more and more curious about how an egg could come out of a chicken. Jane decided to find it out for herself. One afternoon, she tiptoed (蹑手蹑脚地走) into an empty henhouse. She hid quietly in some straw (稻草) and waited. At last, a hen came in. It moved about in the straw at first. Soon the hen half stood up, and something round and white appeared from the feathers between its legs. Then, with a plop (扑通声), the egg dropped onto the straw. The hen shook its feathers happily, gently pushed the egg with its beak (鸟喙), and left. Jane was more excited than before. She ran home to share her amazing discovery. Her mother was looking for her everywhere and was very worried. But when she saw Jane rushing toward the house, she wasn’t angry. Instead, she noticed her daughter’s shining eyes and sat down to listen to the story of how a hen lays an egg. With that same curiosity and freedom to explore, Jane later became a scientist. She spent years studying chimpanzees (黑猩猩) in the wild and made important discoveries about their social behavior. So, never be afraid to ask questions. You’re never too old or too young to wonder about something, explore it for yourself, and then, with shining eyes, share what you’ve discovered with the people you love. 19. What was Jane curious about when she stayed on the farm? A. Where the hens laid their eggs. B. How an egg came out of a hen. C. What the hen did after laying an egg. D. Why Grandma asked her to collect eggs. 20. What can we learn about Jane's mother from the story? A. She was interested in the hen. B. She taught Jane to tell a story. C. She understood Jane’s interest. D. She didn’t care where Jane went. 21. Which of the following is the best topic for the passage? A. Jane Goodall’s happy life on a farm. B. The Importance of family support. C. Jane Goodall’s most famous research. D. The power of curiosity and exploration. C ①Empathy Day on 12 June is about noticing how other people feel. This can help you to feel more connected to them. It also builds emotional intelligence (also called EQ), so it is important to understand what emotional intelligence really is. ②Emotional intelligence is a set of skills that help you notice and understand your own and other people’s feelings, and then act in a way to make things better. Imagine you’re playing football and your friend misses a goal. Instead of getting angry, you notice he is sorry and say it’s OK. This is emotional intelligence. The famous psychologist (心理学家) Daniel Goleman says staying calm, understanding others and being a good friend are all parts of emotional intelligence. ③Learning about emotional intelligence helps us see why it matters in daily life. The more you understand other people’s feelings, the easier it is to get on. For example, everyone falls out with their friends sometimes, and if you’re able to realise someone is nervous and understand why, it’s easier to get along well again. Studies show that developing this kind of intelligence can help build better relationships. ④If you want to build your emotional intelligence, a good start is to learn to take control of your feelings. It’s normal to feel angry sometimes, but feelings and action aren’t the same. As Goleman explains, “Stop, calm down and think before you act.” You can get better at this by telling your true feeling, like “I’m sad” or “I’m nervous.” ⑤Small steps like these help us practise empathy every day. When we care for others’ feelings and manage our own well, we are building happier friendships and a warmer world around us. 22. What is the purpose of Empathy Day? A. To help students do well in study. B. To help people forget their doubts. C. To make people notice how others feel. D. To teach people how to win football games. 23. Why does the writer give the example of playing football in Paragraph 2? A. To teach us how to play football well. B. To explain what emotional intelligence is. C. To tell us not to feel sorry for missing a goal. D. To show that football helps develop friendship. 24. What does the underlined phrase “falls out with” mean in Paragraph 3? A. Plays games with. B. Shares memories with. C. Takes trips with. D. Has arguments with. 25. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? A. B. C. D. 第二节 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读以下短文,用合适的内容完成故事山(每空不超过4词),填入第1~4小题,并回答第5小题。 Long, long ago in China, two friends named Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya showed everyone what real friendship means. 19. B.
