Most fridges need electricity to keep things cold. But a fridge made by three Indian students is special—it uses salt to cool things.
Some medicines and body parts for sick people need to stay cold. This salt fridge can keep them cold well. The students hope it helps make health services better in small towns and villages.
How does salt cool things? When a salt (not the salt we use for cooking) mixes with water and becomes part of the water, it takes heat from the water, so the water gets cool.
After trying different salts, they chose a salt called NH4Cl. When this salt mixes with water, it can make the water cool to 2-6℃. That’s just right for keeping medicine cold. If people need even colder temperatures, they can add another kind of salt. Then the water can get colder than 0℃ for other uses. The students hope it helps rural hospitals. In these places, there is often no steady (稳定的) electricity for fridges.
With this simple but smart idea, the students show that science can solve real-life problems and bring hope to people in need.

4. What is special about the fridge in the passage?
A. It is very big and heavy.
B. It uses salt, not electricity, to cool things.
C. It can keep things cold for more than 2 days.
D. It is made of salt.
5. What does “rural hospitals” probably mean according to the passage?
A. Hospitals in city areas. B. Hospitals in country areas.
C. Hospitals in busy areas. D. Hospitals in quiet areas.

C. The water cools to 2-6℃. D. The water can get colder than 0℃.
