Watch out!
There are con artists around!
We asked for letters about con artists. Here are the first three.
More to come next week!
I was in New York on holiday, and I saw a crowd standing around a young man who was in the street. The man was holding up three playing cards. One of them was a Queen. He put the cards face down on a table and moved them around quickly for a few seconds. Then he invited anyone in the crowd to find the Queen. No one wanted to play, perhaps because they were worried about losing money, but then a young woman bet $10 and won. It seemed easy, so I decided to try my luck. The first time I won and the second time too, but then I started losing. In the end, I lost $90 before the young man disappeared with my money. The young woman also disappeared. The truth is that you can’t beat a con artist unless he wants you to win.
Jason Wiggins, Blackpool
I was reading in the park when a middle-aged woman with a dog walked by. She asked, “Would you please look after my dog? I need to visit my sick mother in the hospital nearby.”I agreed. After she left, an old man walked by. “Nice dog!” he said. “I am a vet. It is a rare dog. It costs about£1,000.” When the woman returned from the hospital, she thanked me and told me she had just lost her job and was hard up. I offered to buy the dog and we finally agreed on a price of £200. I really wanted to help her, but I also thought it was a fast way to make some money. Later, I found out that there was nothing special about the dog. I learned an important lesson: There’s no such thing as easy money.
Marianne Carter, Swansea
A few weeks ago, I received an email from a Mr. Alika. He said he worked for a bank in Nigeria. In the email, he said that three months before, a foreigner had put $40 million in the bank. The next day the rich foreigner died in a plane crash. The money was still in the bank. Mr. Alika said that he was writing to me because I had the same name and nationality as the dead man. If I sent him $500, he would open an account in my name and put the $40 million into the new account. He promised we would split the money fifty-fifty. It was clearly a con, so I called the police immediately.

D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题)(第68至72题, 每题2分; 第73题6分; 共16分)
Feeling stressed by homework, chores, or projects? You can get everything done a little easier. It’s all about building your “executive function” skills.
What is the “executive function”? It’s a set of skills that helps you solve problems, manage your time, and make good decisions. Using these skills can help you feel more in control, whether you’re working on a big school project or just cleaning your room. Here’s how to improve yours.
1. Start with Small Steps
For many people, getting started is the hardest part. Don’t think about the whole job. Instead, find one small thing you can do to make a difference.
Example: If your room is in a mess, don’t think about a “clean room”. Just start by picking up dirty clothes. That’s it! Once that’s done, maybe put all the books back on the shelf. Little by little, you’ll see improvement.
2. Break It Down
Got a big project? Don’t try to do it all at once. Set aside a short amount of time to work on it. Set a timer for just 20 minutes and focus on your work. When the timer goes off, take a 10-minute break. Then, set the timer again for another 20 minutes. You can do almost anything for 20 minutes!
3. Pair Tasks with Something Fun
If you have a boring task to do, make it better by combining it with something you like.
Example: Need to wash dishes or organize your backpack? Put on your favourite music or listen to an audiobook while you work.
4. Find a System That Works for You
The best way to stay organized is to find a method you will actually use. Don’t just copy what someone else does. Instead of using lots of sticky notes that can get lost, try keeping everything in one notebook. Each day, write down your checklist. There’s a great feeling of satisfaction when you cross things off your list!
5. Be Kind to Yourself
Learning these skills takes time and practice. You won’t be perfect at it right away, and that’s totally okay.
Remember: If you forget something or make a mistake, talk to yourself like you would talk to a good friend. Instead of getting mad, say something like, “It’s okay. You’re doing your best, and that’s enough.” Being kind to yourself can actually help you stress less and keep going.
Task 1: Answer the questions.
48. What’s the meaning of the “executive function”?
________________________________________________
49. Which tip is used in the following situation?
If I am stressed about studying for a big English test, I will try not to think “I have to review everything” and I will try to start from reviewing the first five words. When I feel it’s not that difficult, I will start reading paragraphs.
________________________________________________
50. What can you do to make cooking more fun according to tip 3?
________________________________________________
51. How will you feel if you finish your checklist?
________________________________________________
52. What can you do if you make a mistake?
________________________________________________
Task 2:
53. When you’re trying to focus, unexpected thoughts keep coming to your head. Now design a NEW tip of your own to deal with this problem. Explain your tip and give an example of how to use it in about 30 words.
________________________________________________
【答案】48.
It’s a set of skills that helps you solve problems, manage your time, and make good decisions.
49.
Tip 1: Start with Small Steps.
50.
Put on favourite music or listen to an audio book.
51.
I will feel a great feeling of satisfaction.
52.
Talk to yourself like you would talk to a good friend.
53.
Tip: Write unexpected thoughts down on a “distraction list” and deal with them later. For example, if I suddenly think of buying milk, I write it down on a sticky note quickly and refocus on my homework.
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,文章介绍了“执行功能”技能的定义,并详细阐述了提升该技能以更好地管理压力和任务的五个具体建议。
【48题详解】
根据第二段“What is the ‘executive function’? It’s a set of skills that helps you solve problems, manage your time, and make good decisions.”可知“执行功能”是一套帮助你解决问题、管理时间和做出良好决策的技能。
【49题详解】
根据第四段“For many people, getting started is the hardest part. Don’t think about the whole job. Instead, find one small thing you can do to make a difference.”及题干情境可知,情境中强调不去想“复习全部”,而是“从复习前5个单词开始”,这符合Tip 1中“不要想整个任务,找一件小事开始”的原则。
【50题详解】
根据第十段“Example: Need to wash dishes or organize your backpack? Put on your favourite music or listen to an audio book while you work.”可知在做枯燥的任务时可以播放喜欢的音乐或有声书。
【51题详解】
根据第十二段“There’s a great feeling of satisfaction when you cross things off your list!”可知完成清单后会带来极大的满足感。
【52题详解】
根据第十五段“Remember: If you forget something or make a mistake, talk to yourself like you would talk to a good friend.”

A huge “thank you” to Leo from Building 7! He didn’t have paints, but he gave me his soccer ball for FREE after hearing about my wish to paint.
