M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you?
W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club — we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages — you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday — Spanish; Tuesday — Italian; Wednesday — German; and Friday — French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now, you can have the first month free.

M: Good afternoon, everybody, and welcome to this class on English words. I hope that all of you can hear me. If not, please let me know. I am Professor John Morris and I’m your teacher. As you can probably tell, this 13-week class is very popular. Why is this? Well, in order to use English correctly, it’s very important to have a basic understanding of how words are formed. There are about one million words in English. If you are an English learner, you might wonder how you can possibly remember all of these words. Well, for one thing, you don’t have to, because no native speaker exists who knows all of the words in the English language. Besides, there are shortcuts, for example, if you know how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages, such as Greek and French, you will understand a good number of English words when you first come across them. Knowing the rules will help you master a large number of words. This is probably the first reason why this class is so popular.

参考范文:
Dear Jack,
I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble choosing between the chess club and the painting club. I’d like to offer some suggestions.
If I were you, I would sign up for the painting club. For one thing, you have shown great interest in drawing since you came to China, so joining it will satisfy your hobby. For another, painting can calm your mind and offer you a good chance to make more creative friends. Besides, you can learn more about Chinese traditional artworks.
Of course, the chess club is also wonderful. But you can watch its activities in your spare time, even if you don’t join it. Hope my advice will be helpful to you.
Yours,
Li Hua

参考范文:
On prom night, Avant dressed in a black suit and went to his grandma’s house. Svala was surprised to see him dressed so formally. Then, Avant handed her a small bunch of flowers. “We are going to the prom, Grandma,” he said with a smile. Svala was shocked. She covered her mouth with her hands, and tears of joy ran down her face. “You remembered!” she cried. “I thought you had forgotten!” She wore her best dress, tears filling her eyes. Ruben waited outside with a warm smile. They headed to the car, ready for the unforgettable night.
Together, they arrived at the school gym where the prom would be held. The music was loud, and the lights were beautiful. When Avant and Svala walked onto the dance floor, the other students smiled and cheered for them. Then, a slow song began. Avant gently took his grandmother’s hand and led her to the center of the floor. “Thank you, Avant,” she whispered as they danced. “This is the best night of my life.” Avant smiled at her. He was happy because he finally kept the promise he made twelve years ago.

I’m Luna. I was twelve when we moved to Chicago. My father worked in a factory and my mother worked for a laundry (洗衣店). I felt bored and didn’t know what to do after school. Luckily, one day, at the community library board, I saw a notice saying, “The library needs a little helper.” I pushed the door open.
The library was small — just three shelves and an old green lamp in the corner that was always on. The librarian was Otis, a man in his sixties. He walked with a limp (跛行) and used a wooden stick. He spoke slowly. He asked if I could tidy the shelves twice a week. The pay was as many books as I wanted. I replied with a nod.
Otis taught me to put books in order and fix broken ones with tape. He did not talk much, but every time he gave me a book, he said, “This one is worth reading.” The first was Robinson Crusoe. I read it under the green lamp. When I finished, he said, “You can live by your own hands. Remember that.” Next came The Secret Garden. I loved the part where the dead garden came back to life. Then came The Trumpet of the Swan — a swan who could not make a sound but learned to play a trumpet (小号). When I returned it, Otis smiled a little.
In Chicago, it was cold in winter, but the green lamp was always on. I read until dark while Otis sat in the corner fixing old books. For the first time, I felt that being alone did not mean being lonely. Three years later, we moved to Detroit. On my last day, Otis gave me a paper package. Inside was an old copy of Robinson Crusoe. On the first page, he had written, “For the child who read under the lamp — Otis.”
Now I’m a teacher. That old book sits on my desk. Every September, I tell my students what Otis told me, “You can be anyone you want — the people in books will always walk with you.”
24. Why did the author enter the library?
A. To borrow some books. B. To get something to kill time.
C. To ask the librarian for help. D. To find someone to chat.
25. What did the author do after Otis made the offer?
A. She asked for more pay. B. She refused him politely.
C. She gave a silent agreement. D. She wanted a promise from Otis.
26. What is the author’s main purpose of writing paragraph 3?
A. To show Otis’s influence on her. B. To describe the library’s environment.
C. To prove that Otis was a great teacher. D. To list the books she read in the library.
27. How does the author continue Otis’s guidance?
A. By keeping the old book on her desk. B. By telling her students the story about Otis.
C. By writing good stories for her students. D. By passing on his words to her students.

Birds are easy to see in our daily life, but people often do not pay much attention to them. They live almost everywhere and respond quickly to changes in the environment. Their behaviors and movements can tell us a lot about nature and how humans influence it. If a common bird is missing from a neighborhood or arrives later than usual, it may mean that something has changed.
National Bird Day falls on January 5 every year. It started in 2002 to remind people of the importance of protecting birds. Over time, its purpose has grown from bird protection to a broader (更广泛的) care for nature. What began as worry about birds soon became worry about the natural world.
Birds help nature in quiet but important ways. Many kinds of birds carry seeds to faraway places, helping forests grow and damaged land recover. Birds also eat insects that harm crops or spread diseases. By feeding on these insects, birds help farmers and reduce the need for chemicals. Some plants depend on birds to help flowers produce seeds, especially where insect numbers are going down. These relationships support plant growth and food chains (食物链). When bird numbers drop, these natural systems become weaker.
Recent studies show a worrying situation for bird numbers around the world. The loss of living spaces is one of the biggest dangers. Cities are growing and forests are being cut down, so birds are being deprived of nesting areas. Land that was once connected is now broken into smaller, separated pieces. Scientists warn that hundreds of kinds of birds could disappear within the next century if things do not change.
National Bird Day 2025 was not just a celebration. It called attention to how birds link natural systems across the world. Their presence shows the results of the choices people make about land, energy, and protecting nature. The day reminded us to pay attention and take action.
28. What do we know about birds from paragraph 1?
A. They may show us the state of nature. B. They live in quiet neighborhoods.
C. They are as common as people think. D. They seldom change their living habits.
29. What role do birds play in nature according to paragraph 3?
A. They support the increase in food chains. B. They help farmers by eating harmful seeds.
C. They support plant growth in different ways. D. They help forests grow fast by eating insects.
30. What does the underlined phrase “deprived of” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Given back. B. Searched for. C. Depended on. D. Taken away.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. How Birds Help Plants and Farmers B. The Importance of Protecting Birds
C. National Bird Day and Its Celebrations D. The Dangers Birds Face in Modern World
D
Scientists at Loma Linda University Health report that eating eggs may help lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病) in adults aged 65 and older. Their findings suggest that eating eggs regularly could support long-term brain health. The scientists did the study to better understand how diet, something people can change, might influence the chances of getting Alzheimer’s.
The study followed about 40,000 people in a group for about 15 years. To find out how many eggs people ate, the scientists looked at both direct and indirect ways. This included eggs eaten alone, such as mixed and cooked, fried, or boiled, as well as eggs found in foods like cakes and packaged products.
The study found that people who ate at least one egg per day for five or more days each week had up to a 27% lower risk of being found to have Alzheimer’s. Even eating fewer eggs was linked to benefits. Eating eggs just 1 to 3 times per month was linked to a 17% drop in risk, while those who ate eggs 2 to 4 times per week saw about a 20% lower risk.
Eggs contain several substances that feed the body and are important for the brain. They are rich in choline (胆碱), which the body uses to produce substances that are very important for memory and communication between brain cells. Eggs also provide carotenoids that build up in brain tissue (组织) and have been linked to better brain function (功能). The scientists said that eggs should be part of a healthy eating plan. They want people to care about their total health together with this fact about the good of eggs.
32. Why did the scientists carry out the study?
A. To find a way to treat Alzheimer’s disease. B. To compare different food choices.
C. To explore diet’s influence on a disease. D. To prove eggs are healthy food.
33. How did the researchers collect information about egg eating?
A. By recording egg dishes eaten at home. B. By examining every food people bought.
C. By asking people to keep weekly food lists. D. By checking all kinds of egg-containing foods.
34. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. Eating eggs can reduce Alzheimer’s risk. B. Eggs can support people’s weekly need.
C. Eggs have an unclear influence on people. D. Eating eggs helps treat people with Alzheimer’s.
35. What suggestion do the scientists offer about eggs?
A. Eating them three times a day. B. Treating them as part of a balanced meal.
C. Eating them alone for the best results. D. Treating them as a kind of brain medicine.

Sunlight filled the warm living room, where five-year-old Avant Williams sat on the soft carpet, playing with his colorful blocks. His grandma, Svala Heller, sat nearby, watching him with a warm smile. This was their daily routine. Svala took care of Avant with great love. She fed him, sang songs to him, and comforted him when he was upset. They shared a special love that brought them very close.
One afternoon, Svala turned on the TV to watch a movie. On the screen, a high school prom (舞会) scene unfolded — students in beautiful dresses and suits were dancing happily. Svala leaned in slightly, her eyes tracing the movements of the dancers with quiet admiration. Her fingers paused mid-air, moving near her chest, as if she were imagining herself in one of those dresses. Then she leaned back into the sofa, her shoulders dropping just a little and she sighed softly. “Look at that, Avant,” she said. “I grew up in Iceland. We did not have proms there. I always dreamed of going to a special dance like that, but I never had the chance.”
Avant noticed that the way his grandmother smiled had faded. He stopped playing and climbed onto her lap. He looked into her eyes with a serious face. “Don’t be sad, Grandma,” he said in his childish voice. “When I grow up, I will take you to the prom. I promise.” Svala laughed. She thought it was just a sweet joke from a little boy, but she hugged him tightly. “Okay, my dear. I will wait for you,” she said and pulled him into a tight hug.
Twelve years passed quickly. The little boy was now a 17-year-old high school student. Prom season arrived. While most students were asking their classmates to the dance, Avant had a different plan. He never forgot the promise he made in the living room. He decided it was time to make his grandmother’s dream come true.
Avant told his best friend, Ruben Smith, about his plan. “I am taking my grandma to the prom,” Avant said. “It has been her dream for a long time.” Ruben was touched by his friend’s kindness. “Count me in! I’ll be Grandma Svala’s second date!”
