Many people might think that if they had more money, then they would be happier in life. For example, people might look at what others have, like expensive clothes or nice cars, and wish they could have the same. But the things that money can buy cannot bring happiness to a person for a long time.
But is that really true? Studies have found that money can, in fact, make people happier. But it’s not having money that brings happiness. Instead, it’s giving money to others that makes people happy. It could be buying a gift for a friend or a family member. It could be buying a homeless person food to eat. It could be giving money to a person in need. Just think about the last time you used your own money to do something for someone else. How did you feel? Whether it is a small or large amount of money, people feel happier when they give. This is because making someone else happy makes the giver happy, too.
This idea of connecting your happiness to the happiness of others is called “ubuntu” in an African language. There is even a story about a man visiting Africa. He asked some children to race to a nearby tree. The first child to touch the tree would get sweets. Surprisingly, all the children held hands and ran together. They all touched the tree at the same time. The man asked why they did this. The children simply said they could only enjoy eating the treat if everyone had one.

A. To show a fun game for children. B. To explain what “ubuntu” means.
C. To describe life in Africa. D. To show that children love sweets.
39. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Giving money to others. B. Having money.

“Da Tiehua” is a traditional Chinese art. Its name means “making iron flowers”. Old-time metal workers (金属工匠) first made this art over 500 years ago.
In the past, people showed this art during important festivals. They wanted to celebrate good harvests (丰收). They also hoped it would bring good luck to their villages. Everyone loved watching it.

Chinatown is the name of an area in the middle of London. It is a large Chinese community with a lot of Chinese restaurants, Chinese supermarkets and shops.
In the 1950s, it was a poor area. Everything was very cheap. At the same time, the world rice market became bad and thousands of farm workers in Hong Kong lost their jobs. They began going to London to look for work. They found jobs in the restaurants in this area.
These restaurant workers often worked 17 hours a day and had no time to learn English. As more Chinese arrived, more shops and businesses grew up. Women came to join their husbands and children came to join their fathers. The community grew, and Chinatown was born.
In the 1970s and 1980s, British-born Chinese started to have a better education (教育) and this brought economic success to the area. Many families moved out of Chinatown, and there was more space for businesses. Chinatown soon became a popular place for tourists.

Now everyone knows about London’s Chinatown. During the Chinese New Year, the streets are full of flags and thousands of Chinese go into the streets. For most time of the year, though, Londoners and tourists go there mainly for the food in the Chinese restaurants. The best restaurants are the ones where the Chinese eat.
