Sheinmel This is an amazing book about a girl named Maisie, who gets in an accident, and ends up having a face transplant. Part of Maisie’s face got burnt off in a fire, so now she has her cheeks and nose replaced by a different girl’s cheeks and nose. However, if you think about it, the idea seems quite scary. All in all, I really enjoyed this book, and it had me hanging on its every word. WE ARE ALL MADE OF MOLECULES by Susin Nielsen The story focuses on two main characters, Stewart and Ashley. Despite missing his mother, Stewart decides to make a new life with Ashley when he and his dad move into her house. I LOVE this book because it teaches us that if we all put aside all of our differences, we can work together to solve problems in the world, no matter how big or small the problem might be. HOUSE OF WINDOWS by Alexia Casale This book is about a 15-year-old boy named Nick who is at Cambridge University. While there he faces many problems, he is not helped by the fact that his mum is dead and his dad cares more for his work than for him. Luckily, this book has a happy ending. WE ARE ALL MADE OE MOLECULES. B When my sister Mertie told me she had put out tomato plants last summer, I was quite impressed. Since she was a garden-beginner, Mertie researched exactly how far apart to space her tomato plants; what kind of fertilizer to use; how to keep away the bugs, etc. Once they were planted, she took care of them daily, anxiously awaiting the juicy tomatoes to appear. But, day after day, her plants were tomato-less while all of her neighbors who had also put out tomato plants were already enjoying the fruit of their labor. Frustrated, Mertie gave in and went to the market to search fresh tomatoes. While paying, Mertie told the farmer her troubles. The farmer paused to think for a moment and then asked, “Well, what kind of tomatoes did you plant?” “I think they were called Big Boy,” Mertie remembered. “Well there’s your problem,” the farmer explained. “Big Boy and Better Boy tomatoes have a 95-day growing period whereas regular tomato plants produce fruit in as few as 70 days…you just have to wait a little longer for the Big Boys.” With that new knowledge, Mertie went home with excitement, knowing they would be worth the wait. Thinking about my sister’s gardening experience, I had to smile. She just didn’t know that Big Boy tomatoes took longer--neither did I--but once she discovered that information, she was no longer discouraged and upset about the lack of tomatoes on her plants. Instead, she was encouraged and excited to see them a few weeks later. It makes me wonder how many of us have “Big Boy” dreams in our hearts, yet we just don’t realize that they are of the “Big Boy” variety so we are discouraged and worn out with the waiting process. Instead of waiting with excitement, we give up on our dreams and figure we must have done something wrong to stop them from coming to pass. Frustrated, we see other people’s dreams coming true, and we wonder why ours haven’t yet been achieved. 4. What is not mentioned in the passage when growing tomato plants? A. Watering them regularly. B. Keeping them well apart. C. Using suitable fertilizer. D. Controlling pests on them. 5. Why did Mertie’s tomato plants fail to produce at the expected time? A. Because she grew the wrong kind of tomatoes. B. Because they were destroyed by her neighbors. C. Because they required more time to produce. D. Because she didn’t manage the garden well. 6. What does the author compare tomatoes to in the text? A. Experiences. B. Goals. C. Time. D. Imagination. 7. What does the text intend to show us? A. It’s better late than never. B. Success sometimes needs a little patience. C. A bad beginning makes a bad ending. D. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. C One sheep, two sheep. Wait, why are we counting sheep again? Counting sheep to fall asleep is a method that seems to be as old as time. But have you ever stopped to think about why they’re sheep? Why not cats? Or dogs? While the origin of why people count sheep to fall asleep has no exact root, there are a few guesses. The most popular belief, according to Mental Floss, has to do with shepherds in Britain in the Middle Ages. Obviously, if shepherds used communal grazing land (公共牧场), they were responsible to keep a headcount of their sheep each night. So before going to sleep, they counted their sheep to ensure they were all accounted for. But at least one book uncovers that the link between sheep and sleep goes back even further, reports Mental Floss. “A chapter in Disciplina Clericalis suggests that counting sheep has already been part of certain cultures for centuries.” So does counting sheep to fall asleep actually work? Apparently, you might want to seek other choices first. “Involving the brain in a relaxing, repetitive task slows the mind, and stops our racing stressful thoughts from taking over,” says Hilary Thompson, a health consultant. “Unfortunately, counting sheep isn’t one of these helpful tasks. Researchers at Oxford University put it to the test and discovered that subjects who pictured running waterfalls and rivers could fall asleep more quickly.” In addition to picturing something relaxing, breathing techniques also tend to be very effective sleeping aids. “I prefer to teach patients the breath work,” says Dr Elizabeth Trattner. “Breath in through the nose for a count of 4, hold for 7 and make a whooshing noise out for the count of 8. This breathing technique resets the body, and lowers both stress and anxiety.” 8. Before going to bed, why did shepherds count sheep? A. To learn to count numbers. B. To help fall asleep quickly. C. To make sure all sheep were there. D. To strengthen their responsibility. 9. What can be inferred from the book Disciplina Clericalis? A. Counting sheep has a long history. B. The book explains exactly how counting sheep works. C. Counting sheep relates to philosophy. D. The book describes the link between sheep and sleep. 10. What is Hilary Thompson’s view on counting sheep? A. It is helpful to sleep. B. It stops stressful thoughts. C. It is not so effective. D. It makes mind refreshed. 11. What is the best way to fall asleep quickly by Elizabeth Trattner? A. Listening to soft music. B. Picturing water running. C. Imagining relaxing things. D. Applying breathing techniques. D Google’s data centres and the offices for its 60,000 staff will be powered entirely by renewable energy from next year,in what the company has called a “landmark moment”.The internet giant is already the world’s biggest corporate buyer of renewable electricity, last year buying 44% of its power from wind and solar farms. Now it will be 100%,and an executive said it would no longer refuse to invest in nuclear power in the future. Oman said it had taken Google five years to reach the 100% target, set in 2012,because of the complexity involved with negotiating power purchase agreements. The company’s biggest demand for energy is its data centres and it admits their overall thirst for power is growing. Google was now looking to sign 10-year agreements for low-carbon power that was constant, such as hydro, biomass and nuclear.“We want to do contracts on renewable power,it could be biomass if the fuel source is steady and enough,it could be nuclear. We’re looking at all forms of low-carbon generation.” But he said new nuclear power was “controversial”,the possible safety consequences were much more “dramatic” than with renewable sources, and the price was “much more difficult to guarantee” than when funding solar panels and wind turbines.“We don’t want to refuse to sign a nuclear agreement if it meets our goals of low price, safety, and other factors. We don’t want to rule that out,but today we can’t positively say there are nuclear projects out there that meet this standard,”he said. The company’s 100% renewable energy does not mean Google is getting all its energy directly from wind and solar power, but that on an annual basis the amount it purchases from renewable sources matches the electricity its operations consume. 12. A “landmark moment” for Google refers to . A. its efforts in saving energy B. its growing demand for employees C. its progress in using renewable energy D. its becoming the world’s biggest company 13. What made Google slow in achieving its target? A. Negotiations of agreements. B. High consumption of energy. C. Shortage of energy. D. Tight budgets. 14. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4? A. Nuclear power is an ideal choice. B. Solar and wind power is not safe enough. C. It’s unwise to invest solar and wind power. D. Google is unlikely to use nuclear energy soon. 15. What is the purpose in writing this text? A. To show Google’s profit goal in global market. B. To talk about Google’s new move to use energy. C. To recommend a new kind of renewable energy. D. To urge the public to use renewable energy. Real-life Room Escape Games Real-life room escape games are a type of physical adventure game in which people are locked in a room with other participants and have to use the things in the room to settle a series of puzzles, find clues, and escape the room within a set time limit. For as long as she could remember, Chesa had listened to her parents talk warmly about the Hinara, their hometown far across the ocean. Her parents described lush palm trees, warm tropical wind, tasty local snacks and the peaceful countryside where Grandpa lived. Chesa built a perfect, glowing picture of the Hinara in her mind, dreaming that it would be a wonderful oasis (绿洲) full of joy and beauty. At last, the whole family booked flights to visit their relatives. Full of eager excitement, Chesa boarded the plane, counting down the hours until she could step into her imagined paradise. But reality hit her hard the moment they arrived. The air was hot and sticky, full of thick moisture. The roads were narrow and bumpy. Local taxis rumbled (发出轰鸣) noisily along the streets, and simple wooden houses lined the roadside instead of the neat modern buildings she had pictured. Grandpa’s small house was plain and narrow, without the comfortable facilities she was used to back in Indiana. Disappointment washed over Chesa again and again. She refused to try local food, kept quiet during family gatherings, and avoided going out with her grandpa. She thought her dream oasis had turned into a dull, uncomfortable place. Grandpa noticed her low spirits and never blamed her. Every day, he gently invited her to tour around the village, yet Chesa always made up excuses to stay inside alone, wrapped in her negative mood. One afternoon, Chesa sat alone on the back porch, staring blankly at the messy yard, feeling regretful and lonely for being so cold to her kind grandpa. She wondered whether she would ever find the “oasis” she had long dreamed of. Slowly, Grandpa walked over and invited Chesa for a village tour on his motorcycle. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ From that unforgettable ride, Chesa finally understood the true meaning of an oasis. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2026—2027学年度上学期2026级 期中考试英语试卷 考试时间:2026年11月5日 第一部分:听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1. Frustrated, we see other people’s dreams coming true, and we wonder why ours haven’t yet been achieved. 4. What is not mentioned in the passage when growing tomato plants? A. Watering them regularly. 8. C 9. A 10. C 11. 12. C 13. A 14. D 15. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】【参考范文】 Slowly, Grandpa walked over and invited Chesa for a village tour on his motorcycle. Hesitantly, she agreed, not wanting to hurt his sincere heart. As the old motorcycle moved slowly along the country road, a brand-new world unfolded before her eyes. Golden rice fields waved gently in the breeze, and clear streams ran quietly through the village. Local villagers greeted them warmly with big smiles, filling the peaceful countryside with warmth. Grandpa pointed at every corner of the village, sharing his sweet childhood memories and simple life stories. Listening patiently, Chesa gradually let go of her prejudice and disappointment. She began to feel the unique beauty and tranquility of this land. From that unforgettable ride, Chesa finally understood the true meaning of an oasis. An oasis was not a perfect, fancy place she had imagined blindly. Instead, it referred to the warmth of family affection and the simple happiness hidden in ordinary life. Ashamed of her previous selfish attitude, Chesa held Grandpa’s hand tightly. In the following days, she actively experienced local life, tasted traditional food and chatted with villagers happily. This precious journey taught her a profound lesson: true beauty lies in love and warmth rather than superficial appearances. 词类激活 行为类 ①展现:unfold/emerge/reveal ②放弃:let go of/abandon 情绪类 ①犹豫地:hesitantly/reluctantly ②羞愧的:ashamed/guilty 【点睛】【高分句型1】As the old motorcycle moved slowly along the country road, a brand-new world unfolded before her eyes.(运用了as引导的时间状语从句) 【高分句型
