Planning a day at the Palace Museum in Beijing? A little preparation will save you a wasted morning at the gate.

Book before you go

The museum no longer sells tickets at the gate. Every visitor must book online, and tickets are available at 20:00 Beijing time exactly seven days before the visit. In summer and during public holidays they can be gone within minutes. Foreign visitors book with a passport number and must bring the same passport on the day.

When to come

In the busy season the museum is open from 8:30 to 17:00, and in the low season from 8:30to 16:30. Last entry is one hour before closing. It closes every Monday, except on national holidays. No more than 40,000 visitors are admitted each day, so morning tickets go first.

Getting in and out

Enter through the Meridian Gate in the south, and leave through the Gate of Divine Prowess in the north. The visit runs one way: once you are inside, you cannot walk back to the south gate,so arrange your taxi or your next stop around the north exit. Three to four hours will cover the central axis; the quieter courtyards on either side deserve an extra hour.

Good to know

Two small cafés inside the museum serve simple meals, and drinking water is free at several points along the axis. Bags larger than 40 centimetres must be left at the service centre beside the Duanmen Gate. Photographs are welcome, but tripods and selfie sticks are not. Wear comfortable shoes: the walk from the south gate to the imperial garden is more than a kilometer.
