Shenzhen has big news to share with the world. From November 18 to 19, 2026, top leaders from the Asia-Pacific area will meet in this southern Chinese city for the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, following those in Shanghai in 2001 and Beijing in 2014. Now it is Shenzhen’s turn to welcome the world.
So what is APEC? Its full name is Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. It started in 1989 when twelve countries met in Canberra, Australia. Today APEC has 21 member economies (经济体)—not only countries, but also regions like Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei. China joined in 1991. The group has no army and makes no laws. Its members come to cooperate, discuss ways to trade and support each other.
Its 21 members together hold about 40 percent of the world’s people, 50 percent of its trade, and 60 percent of its economy. That is why decisions made here can influence shops, jobs, and prices in many countries.
The theme for China’s APEC year is “Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper (繁荣) Together”. The leaders’ meeting lasts only two days, but the whole year is busy. About 300 APEC events will be held in Chinese cities.
Getting ready for APEC is hard work. Roads and parks are being tidied, and volunteers are being trained. They are also taught English to help foreign visitors. For Shenzhen, this is a chance to show the world what a young and energetic city can do. When November comes, Shenzhen will be ready to spread its wings.
21. How many times has China hosted APEC before 2026?
A. Once. B. Twice. C. Three times. D. Four times.
22. What does the underlined word “cooperate” mean?
A. Work together. B. Have fun. C. Give up. D. Grow up.
23. Why can APEC decisions influence many countries’ daily life?
A. Because it has the largest army in the Asia-Pacific region.
B. Because it holds meetings in different cities every month
C. Because it can make laws for all its member economies.
D. Because it has a large population and strong economic power.
24. What preparations has Shenzhen made for the meeting?
① clean up the roads ② build more parks
③ teach students English ④ train the volunteers
A. ①③ B. ①④ C. ②③ D. ②④
25. What is the best title for the passage?
A. What is APEC B. The History of APEC
C. How APEC Changes World Trade D. Shenzhen: Ready for APEC 2026
【答案】21. B 22. A 23. D 24. B 25. D

Quick Facts
Shenzhen Natural History Museum officially opened on 28 July 2026 in Pingshan District. The building looks like a large stone sitting by the river. Inside, there are eight galleries (展馆) with different themes, and it is a great place for a day trip.
Highlights
Stop one: The Viewing Platform in the Dinosaur Gallery
Stand on the platform and look down at the hall. From above you can better see how big the dinosaurs really are: they fill the space, and the people below look small beside them.
Stop two: The Curving Rooftop Path
This rooftop path (小路) is a great place to take photos. Ask a friend to walk along the path in front of you. Use the path’s edge (边缘) as a leading line. Your friend does not need to look at the camera. The photo looks more natural when your friend is moving.

A. Once. B. Twice. C. Three times. D. Four times.

A. Because it has the largest army in the Asia-Pacific region.
B. Because it holds meetings in different cities every month
C. Because it can make laws for all its member economies.
D. Because it has a large population and strong economic power.
24. What preparations has Shenzhen made for the meeting?
