I was sitting alone at Mister Lew’s Win-Win Bar in the Tenderloin, San Francisco, when the barman offered me an Oreo. He recommended I dip it into gin (杜松子酒), considering the flavor ____16____ together.
Even years later, the experience of this moment remains ____17____ in my memory as one of those only-in-San-Francisco moments. It continues to be one of the best nights I ever spent out ____18____ the city, but it probably would not have happened if I were not by myself. I’ve found that it was only when I set out on my own that I truly learned about this city of mine, and I’m here to persuade you to do the same.
I understand that there can be a ____19____ to eat alone but that’s mostly in others’ head. What dining alone affords you — as I’ve found out over years of being seated solo at tables and bars — is “____20____.” There is a lot I mean by that word. It could mean an opportunity to meet a person ____21____ you, or to stay longer with a bartender and ask questions about the big and small things in drinking (and life). It could also mean just taking a chance to ____22____, whether that be to your own thoughts or to just the busy and lively atmosphere of the city. While I may not remember the names of all the strangers I have met, they have become a (n) ____23____ part of my San Francisco experience.
There are other things to be learned alone. If you are a food nerd like me, sometimes the taste of a meal hits ____24____ without the distraction of another voice. You will ____25____ more on your plate, the delicious crunch of a topping (配料), or a beautifully salted, in season tomato. Too often we are distracted with the art of ____26____, having to think of a clever thing to say or getting lost in describing a circumstance. Eating alone forces you into your own moments, and maybe into a new level of ____27____ for the food you are eating. Instead of just eating to satisfy hunger in the usual way, anything can become more ____28____, from a corner store sandwich to a full tasting menu.
____29____ into this the fact that you probably don’t have to go into any ____30____ with yourself beforehand as to whether to eat Cantonese food or to grab a burger. You are going to exactly the spot that you chose, and you are already treating yourself to a nice night of food, without any argument.
Years having passed, I have dearly ____31____ my “third place”, those spaces where I dreamed, chatted with strangers and listened. I set out to see what I could find on a recent weekend. What I was ____32____ to discover was that San Francisco is not dying. The people and characters that make the city ____33____ are still out there and bringing the city to life. When a fellow single diner turned to me, nodded, and recommended a couple of plates he was eating, it felt like a taste of what I have long ____34____ about the city. And as I stared off into the distance, then wrote down a line or two of this piece on the backside of a paper coaster (杯垫), it was the most ____35____ I had felt in more than a year.

Global Summer Camp Stories — Share your experience!
Posted on 1st June, 2026 9:30 am
If you’re a high school student (9th grade and above) looking for an amazing summer experience that’s both fun and rewarding, let me tell you about EPGY Summer Institutes — run by Stanford University. This three-week program is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I can’t recommend it enough!
What I love most about EPGY is the variety of courses it offers — there’s truly something for everyone, whether you’re into writing, computer programming, math, or even law. There is definitely one for you!
As someone who’s attended this program for two years in a row, I can say that I looked forward to it every summer. My days there followed a nice, balanced routine: after breakfast, we’d head to class. I took Creative Writing and Expository Writing during my two years, and both were incredible in their own way.
In Creative Writing, we wrote poems and short stories and shared our works with our peers, giving each other constructive feedback. We even dove into analyzing short stories by famous authors like Ray Bradbury. Expository Writing was just as great — it gave me the chance to practice writing all kinds of pieces, from memoirs about my own life to persuasive essays and even book reviews.
“All work and no play ???” Don’t worry — EPGY gets it! There are tons of fun activities to choose from, so you’ll never be bored. You can sign up for sports teams like basketball or flag football, or try something more relaxing like yoga or swimming. I even tried jewelry making one day, which was way more fun than I expected!
Now, let’s talk about the application process — you need to fill out an application early, so don’t wait until the last minute! You’ll also need to submit your report cards, unless you’re an international student. Of course, there’s an application fee, but the good news is that EPGY offers scholarships for students who have financial difficulties.
These summer experiences are the most precious memories in my life, because I have learned and grown. They are filled with so much fun, so many new skills, and lifelong friendships.

For most of my childhood, I had only one dream — to leave my small town and see the world. I grew up in a quiet village in southern China, where everyone knew each other and life moved at a slow, steady pace. By the time I was eighteen, I had a chance to be an exchange student in a small town in the United States, and I jumped at it.
My first month in the U.S. was a blur of new experiences. I stayed with a kind host family, attended a local high school, and tried to make sense of a culture that was very different from my own. I remember the first time my American host mother asked me, “How was your day?” and I had no idea what to say. In my family, we rarely shared our daily feelings in such a direct way. I would say, “It was fine,” and change the subject. She looked a little confused but said nothing.
Slowly, I began to notice more differences. At school, students called teachers by their first names, and they often asked questions in class. In my Chinese school, we were expected to be quiet and listen. I felt uncomfortable at first, but soon I realized that asking questions was a sign of curiosity, not disrespect. My American classmates asked because they wanted to learn, and their teachers welcomed the questions.
But the biggest change was inside me. I had thought that my Chinese way of doing things was the “right” way. After a few months, I understood that there is no single right way to live. Both cultures had beautiful traditions, and both had things they could learn from. I started to enjoy the openness of American culture — the way people smiled at strangers, the way they said “thank you” for small things. At the same time, I missed the deep family bonds and the quiet strength of my own culture.
When I returned home after a year, my friends noticed something different about me. I was more open, more willing to share my thoughts, and more curious about the world. I had not given up my Chinese identity; I had simply added something new to it. As my grandmother said, “Travel does not take away where you come from. It only makes you richer in where you belong.”
41. Why did the author want to leave his hometown?
A. To visit a quiet village in the south of China.
B. To escape his village for a better life.
C. To go out and broaden his horizons.
D. To live a slow, steady pace life.
42. How did the writer feel when asked “How was your day” by the host mother?
A. Hopeless. B. In despair. C. Helpless. D. At a loss.
43. What difference did the author notice in an American class?
A. Students called the teachers by their family names.
B. The teachers hated it when students asked questions.
C. Students asked questions due to interest in learning.
D. The teachers preferred a quieter class to a noisy one.
44. What does the underlined word “blur” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. A promising picture. B. A confusing period. C. A boring experience. D. A serious situation.
45. What message does the author try to convey in the text?
A. One should follow his dreams, no matter what.
B. Grandma always has valuable advice on growth.
C. Travel and openness enrich a person’s life.
D. Exchange students help promote Chinese.
C
Dogs are loyal, loving pets. They rush to greet you and offer comfort on hard days. Cats, in contrast, don’t care about your bad day. Cat people have reputations for being odd and independent. Dog people for being friendly and easygoing. People even rate strangers photographed with dogs as more likable than people pictured with cats. Do these stereotypes (刻板印象) have any basis in reality?
Psychologist Sam Gosling of the University of Texas sought to investigate this very question. In one approach, he had pet owners complete standardized personality inventories. The results suggested a correlative mirroring: similar to popular perceptions of their pets, cat owners tended to score higher in traits like curiosity, and creativity, often exhibiting a stronger preference for privacy. Dog owners, more frequently identified as outgoing, energetic, relaxed, placed greater emphasis on traits like dutifulness and loyalty.
Researchers also found a different way to study the personalities. First, they used object recognition technology to identify users who posted pictures of cats or dogs on social media. Then, they compared what those people shared online. Dog people looked more social and easygoing. They averaged more friends and posted more often about feeling proud or excited. Cat people were more likely to be single and to post about feeling tired, annoyed, or sad. But cat people also seemed more intellectual and open-minded. They liked social media pages about books, TV shows, and movies more than dog people did.
People might disagree with these findings because they can think of exceptions. Some cat owners are outgoing. Some dog owners are worriers. That doesn’t make research on cat and dog people wrong. Like most researches, it focuses on groups of people. It describes what is true in general, not what is true for each individual.
It seems logical for people who like alone time to choose cats. It makes sense for active, outgoing people to choose dogs. But it may not be that simple. Pets also might shape personality. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it works both ways,” Gosling says. Shy dog owners might not become the life of the party, but their daily walks might get them talking to neighbors.
46. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. Presenting a question. B. Introducing a topic.
C. Explaining a common sense. D. Providing a result.
47. Researchers’ study shows ________.
A. Dog people are proud, outgoing and open-minded.
B. Cat people are social, easygoing and intellectual.
C. Pet animals mirror the traits of their owners’ personality.
D. People’s characters relate to their pets’ to some degree.
48. What can we learn from the 4th paragraph?
A. The research on cat and dog people is nonsense.
B. People fail to distinguish cat and dog people.
C. The author thinks the findings are acceptable.
D. Researches focus on groups of similar people.
49. According to Gosling, how can a shy person possibly change by keeping a dog?
A. By joining in more parties. B. By talking to neighbors more.
C. By thinking more logically. D. By walking dogs more frequently.
50. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Cat or dog owners take on similar characters as their pets.
B. Pets play a significant role in their owners’ character building.
C. Researches on cat and dog owners show opposite findings.
D. Dog people differ from cat people in their passion for the pets.
D
Every school has an in-crowd — and a less-than-cool group, too.
“Amy’s hair is always perfect. And,” says 17-year-old Danielle L. about her classmate, “she has so many outfits that she doesn’t wear the same one twice.” Like Danielle, you probably know who’s really popular at your school. They’re the trendsetters (引领潮流者), and everyone else follows their lead.
The standards of the in-crowd differ from culture to culture and even school to school. Nevertheless, teens worldwide worry about popularity. As people grow from children to adults, looking for support from peers is normal, explains a psychologist at the University of North Carolina.
Being popular has certain benefits. Popular kids often enjoy plenty of party invitations and dates. Along the way, they develop social skills and learn how to get along in different situations too.
Being a trendsetter can also be exciting. That’s especially true if that status is used for a positive goal, such as making school a more welcoming place. “It is my hope that popular teens will choose to be the superhero rather than the villain,” says psychologist Leanna Closson.
Popularity can have an unpleasant side, though. “Amy is very self-centred and complains about small things,” notes Danielle. “She makes fun of other people and is in general not an all-around nice person.” Eric M. says the popular crowd acts the same way at his high school. “They act really mean on the outside to make themselves seem better than everyone else,” says the 16-year-old.
If being both popular and unlikable seems strange, think about how some teens — especially girls — try to boast their status. They don’t just pick on unpopular kids; they often aim at the middle and higher popularity levels. Teens may secretly hope their popularity will rise if they knock down possible “competitors”. Even if that makes them more popular, in the process they may make themselves less likeable.
Achieving popularity doesn’t promise happiness, either. One study of New England teens found that high-status girls were more likely to have symptoms of depression after high school. Feeling you always have to act a certain way to stay popular can be stressful, suggests Antonius Cillessen of the Netherlands’ Radboud University. “Keeping status is like walking on your toes all the time,” he says. “It’s hard work.”
51. What can we learn about the standards of popularity from Paragraph 3?
A. They are exactly the same in different schools.
B. They vary depending on cultural and school backgrounds.
C. They are mainly determined by students’ academic performance.
D. They have nothing to do with teenagers’ peer relationships.
52. What does the psychologist Leanna Closson imply about popular teens?
A. They should use their influence to create a better school environment.
B. They are more likely to become superheroes in real life.
C. They often set bad examples for other students at school.
D. They should avoid competing with unpopular students.
53. What is one negative consequence of seeking popularity mentioned in the text?
A. It makes teens completely lose their individuality.
B. It may cause popular teens to become less likable.
C. It forces teens to give up their hobbies and interests.
D. It makes popular students fail to get along with others.
54. What Antonius Cillessen said in the last paragraph probably means ________.
A. maintaining popularity requires constant effort and causes stress as well
B. popular students pay close attention to their physical images to show off
C. keeping social status helps students become more confident and adorable
D. popular teens enjoy the gift for ballet dancing over average students
55. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Advantages of Being Popular at School.
B. Why Teenagers Long for Popularity Worldwide.
C. Popularity: Benefits, Drawbacks and Hidden Costs.
D. How to Become a Trendsetter Among Teenagers.

One evening, Sophia was looking through her phone when she saw a message from a local animal shelter. The shelter was having difficulty caring for abandoned animals because it didn’t have enough money. The message included a picture of a dog named Max, whose hopeful eyes seemed to plead for help. Sophia, a high school student who loved animals, couldn’t stop thinking about Max. She felt deeply connected to his story and decided she had to do something.
Determined to help, Sophia shared the shelter’s message on her own social media page. She wrote a touching post asking her friends to donate or offer their time. She carefully chose her words, hoping to encourage others to take action. At first, she wasn’t sure if anyone would respond. To her surprise, within hours, her post began spreading. Friends, classmates, and even people she didn’t know started sharing it, and donations began coming in. Sophia was amazed at how quickly people joined together to help.
But she didn’t stop there. Sophia decided to organize a weekend fundraiser at her school, selling handmade goods and hosting a pet adoption event. The preparation wasn’t easy — she had to balance her schoolwork with planning the event. She spent days making posters, baking snacks, and asking local businesses to support the event. Despite the challenges, the turnout was amazing — students, parents, and teachers all came to help. By the end of the weekend, the shelter had raised enough money to care for the animals for several months.
Max found a loving home, and Sophia found something more: a sense of purpose. She realized that one small action — sharing a message — could lead to kindness and change. Her efforts not only saved animals but also brought her community together to make a difference.

5. Later in this chapter the case will be introduced to readers ______ consumers’ support became a stream of motivation for improvement of the company.

A. Being praised B. Praised C. Having been praised D. To be praised
【答案】A
【解析】
【详解】句意:——什么使他最近情绪这么高涨?——因为成功通过考试而被老师表扬。分析句子结构可知,答句为省略句,完整形式为“______ by his teacher for succeeding passing the exam has made him in such high spirits recently.”,空格处在句中充当主语,表示已经发生的客观事实,通常使用动名词形式。

【答案】A
【解析】

Admittedly诚然,无可否认,to be addressed有待解决。根据前半句“working from home offers great flexibility”和后半句“but issues like maintaining work-life-balance and avoiding burnout still remain”可知,前后为转折关系,故第一空应选表示承认的副词Admittedly,引出优点;固定搭配remain to be done 表示“有待被……”,address意为“处理、解决”,问题是“有待被处理”,用to be addressed。

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下列短文并回答问题。

【56题详解】
考查词句猜测。根据文章第一段中的“The shelter was having difficulty caring for abandoned animals because it didn’t have enough money. The message included a picture of a dog named Max, whose hopeful eyes seemed to plead for help. (收容所因为资金不足,在照顾被遗弃的动物方面遇到了困难。信息中附带了一张名叫Max的狗的照片,它充满希望的眼神似乎在为获得帮助而……。)”可知,Max是一只急需救助的流浪狗,眼睛里应该充满着希望的眼神为获得帮助而乞求,可推测出“plead”在此处的意思是“恳求”或“乞求”,同义词替换为beg/ask。
【57题详解】
考查细节理解。根据文章第一段中的“One evening, Sophia was looking through her phone when she saw a message from a local animal shelter. The shelter was having difficulty caring for abandoned animals because it didn’t have enough money. (一天晚上,Sophia在浏览手机时,看到一条来自当地动物收容所的消息。由于资金不足,该收容所难以照顾被遗弃的动物。)”以及“Sophia, a high school student who loved animals, couldn’t stop thinking about Max. She felt deeply connected to his story and decided she had to do something. (Sophia是一名热爱动物的高中生,她一直无法停止对Max的思念。她深深被他的故事所打动,决定要为他做点什么。)”可知,Sophia决定帮助收容所是因为她看到了收容所面临的困境(缺乏资金),并且对Max的故事产生了共鸣,因此Sophia了解到收容所的需要,决定伸出援手。
【58题详解】
考查细节理解。根据文章第三段中的“By the end of the weekend, the shelter had raised enough money to care for the animals for several months. (到周末结束时,收容所筹集到了足够的资金,可以维持照顾这些动物几个月。)”以及第四段中的“Her efforts not only saved animals but also brought her community together to make a difference. 【59题详解】
考查推理判断。根据文章第二段中的“Determined to help, Sophia shared the shelter’s message on her own social media page. (Sophia下定决心提供帮助,在自己的社交媒体页面上分享了收容所的信息。)”以及第三段中的“The preparation wasn’t easy — she had to balance her schoolwork with planning the event. She spent days making posters, baking snacks, and asking local businesses to support the event. Despite the challenges, the turnout was amazing — students, parents, and teachers all came to help. (筹备过程并不容易——她必须在学业和活动策划之间取得平衡。她花了数天时间制作海报、烘烤零食,并向当地商家寻求支持。尽管面临种种困难,活动的参与人数却令人惊叹——学生、家长和老师们纷纷前来帮忙。)”可知,Sophia 在面对困难时没有放弃,而是积极平衡学业与活动,展现了她坚定、有爱心且勤奋负责的品质。
【60题详解】
开放性试题。根据文章第四段中的“She realized that one small action — sharing a message — could lead to kindness and change. (她意识到,一个小小的举动——分享一条信息——就能带来善意和改变。)”可知,Sophia 的故事告诉我们,即使是微小的行动也能产生积极的影响。此题要求回答的问题是“Sophia的故事如何激励你为自己的社区或日常生活带来改变?”该题目答案不唯一,回答合理即可。我认为可以从小事做起,比如帮助身边有需要的人,例如做志愿者或组织慈善活动。

【答案】
My Understanding of Failure
Good morning, dear teachers and classmates. Today my topic is My Understanding of Failure.
The famous saying goes, “A man can fail many times, but he isn’t a failure until he begins to blame somebody else.” In my opinion, failure itself is not terrible. What truly makes us a failure is refusing to take responsibility and shifting our mistakes to others.
I once failed an important maths test. At first, I wanted to complain about difficult questions. But soon I realized I hadn’t reviewed carefully. I sorted out my mistakes and made a study plan. Slowly, my grades improved. This experience taught me to face failure bravely instead of making excuses.
Here are some suggestions for those who are troubled by failure. First, stop blaming others and reflect on your own problems. Second, treat failure as valuable experience and keep trying.
Failure is the mother of success. Only by being responsible for our mistakes can we grow stronger. Thank you!
