Meng Xiang was crazy about films and music during his childhood. When he started college, he dreamed to make films that could combine (结合) his love for storytelling and interest in music.
His biggest challenge came when he planned to make a film about a tennis player. Since no one would offer him money for a 2-hour film, Meng and his college friends tried to make a shorter one. They bought a second-hand camera and used old things instead of expensive equipment (设备). They even made a shelf on their own to support the camera.
Meng and his friends worked hard, rain or shine. When filming the tennis player, they ran after him in the summer sun. If it rained and they couldn’t film outside, they hung bed sheets (床单) on the walls in an empty room to set up a simple studio (摄影棚). This 12-minute film got much attention. The actors’ hair was blowing in the wind while they were dancing and singing. The loud voice and laughter of the team filled the air.
Their musical film was well received and won several awards at a film festival. As Meng said, “Making films isn’t about having the best equipment or famous actors. What do you get when you mix garlic (大蒜) and a robot? You get “Xiaosuan” (meaning “Little Garlic”)—a cute robot guide dog now working at Shenzhen Metro (地铁)!
On December 13, 2025, Shenzhen Metro started trying something new at Huangmugang Station. A robot guide dog named “Xiaosuan” began helping blind passengers get around. It is the first robot guide dog ever used in a subway system anywhere in the world.
Why “Garlic”? Well, “suan” in Chinese also means “computing power”. And just like garlic adds taste to food, this robot adds convenience to travel!
Xiaosuan may look small, but it’s full of cool technology. Blind passengers can simply say, “Take me to the lift,” and Xiaosuan will plan the best route (路线), avoid people and things in its way, and follow special paths for the blind. It can even notice things that real dogs might miss, like glass doors. One user named Mo said after trying it, “Unlike real guide dogs, it doesn’t lose focus. That makes me feel more confident while walking.”
Right now, Xiaosuan waits near the lifts at Exits 13 and 14. During this test, a metro worker stays nearby to make sure everything goes well. If the test is successful, more such robots will appear at other stations in the future. Many people online love this idea. One person wrote, “Technology makes life better. Shenzhen is truly a city of dreams.”
6. Who is “Xiaosuan”?
A. A piece of garlic. B. A real dog.
C. A blind man. D. A smart robot.
7. How can Xiaosuan help blind passengers?
A. It can communicate with them happily.
B. It can help them buy metro tickets.
C. It can lead them to find the right place.
D. It can wait for them right at the lift.
8. What does the underlined word “That” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Noticing glass doors. B. Never losing attention.
C. Leading a way to the lift. D. Speaking to blind passengers.
9. What can be learned about Xiaosuan from Paragraph 5?
A. It will be used in more places if it works well in this test.
B. It may replace all human workers at the metro station soon.
C. It has already been put into use at every station in Shenzhen.
D. It will soon be taken out of service because it costs too much.
10. In which part of a newspaper can we probably find the passage?
A. Art. B. Sports. C. Nature. D. Technology.

Without enough teaching materials, she could only collect articles from English newspapers and magazines. In spoken English teaching, Isabel asked students to watch her in a given conversation first. Since there were no tape recorders at school, she had to perform the conversation again and again.
Isabel retired in 1981, but she returned to Southwest China many times to help children from poor families. She also went to Inner Mongolia, Ningxia and other places to help with foreign language teaching. Isabel died in 2023 in Beijing.

It’s Day 45 of our expedition (探险) to the South Pole. This must be one of the most difficult days I’ve ever had. We’re finally just a few miles away from our destination (目的地).
This whole trip has been very difficult. We’ve been walking around 12 hours a day and I’m very tired. Whenever I was almost ready to give up, I tried to think of how Roald Amundsen overcame his difficulties more than 100 years ago.
This journey has been special even though at times it felt like it was never going to end. First, it’s not easy to move over the snow or ice. Sometimes, it’s hard to see more than a few meters because of the white snow and the snowstorms. Luckily, we have planned the routes (路线) well.
Another challenge of the journey is preparing good food. Sometimes, we just have some nuts and sweets since there’s no time to stop for a proper meal. Even so, we’ve always made sure that we eat the right food so that we can continue our journey with enough energy.
I think the hardest part is protecting our feet. It would be awful if we couldn’t get to the Pole because of foot or other injuries (受伤). Our team doctor has always treated our injuries well and has kept us staying healthy.
Well, we made it! How wonderful it feels to finally be standing at the South Pole! This expedition has taught me that we need to overcome all kinds of difficulties before we can succeed and that we should never give up.

【答案】
Sports Spirit in My Story
Sports play an important role in my life. My favorite sport is running. It not only builds up my body but also strengthens my mind.
When I first started running, I felt very tired and wanted to give up. However, I insisted on practicing every morning regardless of the weather. Gradually, I became faster and stronger. Last month, I won a prize in the school sports meeting.
Through this experience, I have learned that persistence is the key to success. No matter what difficulties we meet, we should never lose heart. This is the true sports spirit.
