Our school library was built in 1985. For years, it was a quiet place with thousands of old books. Students used to say the library was useful but a little boring.
Last term, everything changed. The library has been rebuilt and now has a digital reading room, where students can read e-books and listen to audio books. Our school has also bought hundreds of tablets for group study. “It’s the most high-tech library I have ever visited,” one student said after the opening day. The biggest surprise, however, is the “living library”. Once a month, the school invites grandparents, teachers and workers to sit at small tables and tell students stories about their lives. Last month, a 70-year-old villager came and told us how his hometown had changed in the last forty years. Students could ask him anything they wondered.
The old building has changed, but its role has not. As our librarian said, “Technology changes how we read, but it cannot change why we read—to understand the world and ourselves.”
