MEETING THE CUTE BUT DANGEROUS MARMOTS ACROSS CHINA
There are four kinds of marmots in China. They live in different parts of the country.
Many people have fallen in love with the cute marmots (土拨鼠) in the movie Ne Zha 2. Recently, it’s reported that a lady from Shanghai bought a real marmot online. Cute as they are, we can’t keep them as pets because they can hurt us. |
| Why are marmots dangerous? Marmots can carry plague bacteria (鼠疫杆菌). The plague spreads quickly. It can kill 30 to 100 percent of people who catch it. Symptoms (症状) include bleeding (流血) and the skin turning dark after death. Though going to the hospital can lower the risk of death, we should still avoid touching marmots. |

①On October 11, 2026, young Chinese tennis player Zheng Qinwen made history at the China Open in Beijing. She beat Mirra Andreeva, the French Open champion, in two tight sets (苦战两盘), 7-5 and 6-4, and finally won the first place. This is a great record for Chinese tennis players who play at home. Her success did not come from good luck. Instead, it comes from her long-term hard work and strong mind. ▲
②Zheng’s road to this historic win was far from easy. Months ago, she hurt her elbow badly, so she had to stop her daily training for a long time. Because of the injury, her tennis level fell down and she felt very upset. However, she never gave up her tennis dream. Instead, she slowly recovered her body and kept practicing little by little every day. She spent lots of time improving her skills so that she could wait patiently for the chance to prove herself.
③During the big game in Beijing, she faced great pressure. The foreign player played very well and brought lots of challenges to her. Even so, Zheng always kept cool and clear-headed. She studied the other player’s playing style carefully and tried her best to catch every chance to win points. As a result, she stuck to the game until the last minute and never lost hope.
④Zheng Qinwen’s story teaches teenagers a valuable lesson. In fact, no one can succeed easily. All great achievements are based on continuous effort and strong self-control. So when we meet troubles in our study or life, we should learn from her. We should stay brave, hold on to our goals and never give up easily.

Recently, on October 15, 2026, Tesla brought its new Roadster (跑车) to a public test in Texas. A short video of this car climbing a wall, hanging upside down and rolling over high up in the air quickly spread online. For many viewers, these amazing moves once only appeared in science fiction films.
The special performance depends on two key systems. Powerful fans under the car create strong suction (吸附力), so it can stay on walls and keep upside down safely. Cold-gas thrusters (冷气推进器) around the car give it extra power to jump and roll. No driver sat inside the car during the whole test. Engineers controlled it from far away, because this way could keep people away from possible danger. After rolling over several parked cars, the car landed smoothly on its wheels.
Exciting as the show looks, this car is still just a prototype (原型车). It is not ready for sale to ordinary buyers. What’s more, these surprising functions are not allowed on public roads now. Scientists also warn that the powerful thrusters may bring hidden risks if users operate them carelessly. No one can tell clearly when this kind of car will enter the market.
This amazing test makes people rethink the future of cars. It shows that technology is always breaking old limits. However, new technology itself is neither good nor bad. Its value depends on how human beings use it. While we enjoy the surprise brought by new inventions, we should never forget safety rules and related risks.
7. Why was there no driver in the Roadster during the test?
A. The car could run without any power. B. Remote control was used to keep people safe.
