Once as a doctor of the children’s health department at Capital Center for Children’s Health, Capital Medical University, she has given her whole life to stopping and treating children’s asthma. Her phone keeps the contact details of more than 100 basic-level doctors, and she clearly remembers what kinds of difficult cases each of them has met. WeChat, online meetings, patient records on apps, and even AI software — she has tried her best to keep up with all the new tools young people use. In the 1980s, Chen travelled to Australia as a visiting researcher to learn the world widely accepted ways of treating asthma at that time. After she came back to China, she found many hospitals used some medicine for children’s asthma without careful thought. Kids had asthma trouble again and again, and parents did not know what to do. In 1987, together with several young medical workers, she set up an asthma center. They used breathing function checks and long-term illness management to follow each child’s condition carefully. For over thirty years, she has helped more than twelve hospitals around China build children’s asthma care room. She has also organized more than 30 professional meetings on children’s trouble, over 20 summer and winter camps for kids with asthma, and more than 10 sports activities for these children. Her hard work has trained medical workers and taught kids and their parents how to stop and deal with asthma. “Proper exercise helps control asthma at an early stage,” Chen says. “Getting children close to nature and letting them experience the world means much more than only using medicine after they fall ill.” Now in her 90s, Chen’s husband often asks her to spend less time on her phone and stop worrying too much, because he is afraid she will make herself too tired. She agrees, but she really cannot stop her work. She believes if you help one doctor, you may help many children. The sense of being needed makes her feel warm and satisfied. 24. What information about Chen can we get from Para. 1? A. She hardly uses new digital tools. B. She is in touch with many doctors. C. She works mostly at breakfast. D. She treats kids face-to-face daily. 25. What problem did Chen find in China in the 1980s? A. Hospitals had no medicine for children’s asthma. B. Australian treatment couldn’t be used in China. C. Doctors refused to try new ways to treat asthma. D. Parents knew little about treating kids’ asthma. 26. What can we learn from Chen’s words? A. Exercise and nature count much. B. Medicine works better for ill kids. C. Early control of asthma matters little. D. Asthmatic kids should stay indoors. 27. Which word can best describe Chen Yuzhi? A. Hardworking and proud. B. Independent and strict. C. Devoted and responsible. D. Confident and serious. C You are halfway through your exercise. Your legs feel tired, and you do not want to finish another group. What if you smell chocolate just when you decide whether to go on? You cannot eat it — you can only smell it. Will this change your training results? In a small test, men who smelt chocolate finished more leg movements than those in the water group. They did not feel the exercise became much harder. Researchers chose 23 healthy men. All of them had weight training for at least two years. Each man took part in three tests on different mornings after a night without food. In one test, they smelt something with 90% dark chocolate. In another, they smelt a mix of chocolate and milk. The third test used only water. Every man tried all three groups, but in different orders. They smelt the material for 30 seconds before exercise and between breaks. Then they kept doing leg movements until they could not continue. On average, they did 18 more movements with dark chocolate smell and nine more with milk chocolate smell. Dark chocolate smell also helped them finish one more group. You may think chocolate smell makes people want food. But the result was surprising. Before exercise, men felt less hungry and fuller with dark chocolate smell. Milk chocolate smell made them want food more, while other hunger signs stayed the same. Less hunger went with better results. Still, we cannot prove hunger directly caused the improvement. The milk chocolate finding makes this clear: men did more movements even with higher hunger. Other possible reasons include people’s hopes, willpower and the links between smells and food. The test did not check body chemicals or brain activity to support these ideas. 28. How did the men feel when smelling chocolate? A. They felt much more tired. B. They felt no clear rise in difficulty. C. They stopped early for hunger. D. They liked sweet food much less. 29. What can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4? A. Less hunger comes from harder exercise. B. Chocolate smells affect hunger differently. C. Less hunger leads to better performance. D. Water smell works as well as chocolate. 30. What will the researchers most likely do next? A. Check body chemicals or brain activity. B. Stop doing tests on chocolate smell. C. Carry out similar tests only on women. D. Give dark chocolate to men before training. 31. What is the main idea of the text? A. Weight training helps reduce hunger. B. Eating chocolate makes legs feel tired. C. Dark chocolate is the best food for sports. D. Smells can change how we exercise. D Data centres, large houses filled with powerful servers that store and process Internet information, have become a topic of discussion. While some argue they are important for modern digital life, others worry about their environmental effect. The question of whether more should be built is heatedly discussed. Supporters think it necessary. The UK already has over 560 data centres, the second-highest number in the world, yet the need continues to grow. Activities like streaming videos, playing online games, and using AI rely heavily on these centres. Government minister Chris Bryant warned that without enough data centres, AI development could be delayed. Additionally, new centres could reduce dependence on foreign servers, improving service speed for UK users. They also promise economic benefits: creating thousands of high-quality jobs and contributing about £4.7 billion yearly to the UK economy. However, some people raise serious environmental concerns. Data centres need a great amount of energy, often from fossil fuels (化石燃料) like coal and gas, which worsens climate change. The International Energy Agency notes that one AI data centre uses as much energy as 100,000 homes. They also require millions of litres of water for cooling systems, placing a heavy burden to local water supplies. Moreover, the heat can raise surrounding air temperatures by up to 9℃, influencing nearby ecosystems and communities. A recent YouGov study shows nearly 50% of UK adults dislike new data centres in their areas, reflecting public concern. Environmental groups advocate for more practical servers instead of building more large centres, arguing this would reduce energy and water use while reducing community influence. In conclusion, data centres are very important for technological progress and economic growth, but their environmental costs cannot be ignored. Balancing these is very important. Perhaps the solution is not simply about building more centres, but about creating towards greater efficiency (效率) and sustainability (可持续性). Only by addressing both the need for data centres and the necessity of environmental protection can we ensure a future where technology serves human beings without harming the planet. 32. Which of the following arguments do the supporters agree with? A. They can help reduce the cost of online games. B. They use less water than traditional factories. C. They are built to replace foreign servers wholly. D. They contribute greatly to job creation and economy. 33. What does the underlined word “advocate” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. To suggest a particular plan publicly. B. To complain about a tough situation. C. To figure out the cost of something. D. To ignore the environmental problems. 34. What is the author’s attitude towards building more data centres? A. Supportive. B. Unfavorable. C. Objective. D. Unconcerned. 35. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Digital Life: The Growing Demand for AI Services B. Data Centers: A Battle Between Progress and Nature C. Green Servers: A Solution to Energy Consumption D.
