When I stepped into my new school on a bright September morning, I felt excited and nervous at the same time. Everything was new: the tall teaching buildings, the friendly faces and, most of all, the challenges ahead of me.
On the first day, our headteacher gave us a short but powerful speech. “Senior high school is the start of a three-year journey,” she said. “The path before you leads to a world full of challenges. However, for those of you with a positive mind, opportunity lies in each challenge. When you rise to the challenges, you will have the chance to acquire great knowledge and enjoy personal growth.”
At first, I did not fully understand her words. Soon, life itself became my teacher. Math problems got harder, English passages got longer, and there were far more subjects than in junior high. After I failed my first physics test, my confidence fell suddenly. I began to think that maybe I was not smart enough for senior high school.
My physics teacher noticed the change in me. Instead of criticizing me, she helped me analyse my papers and set a clear goal for each week. “It is not talent but continuous effort that makes a difference,” she told me. Following her advice, I made a study plan, corrected my mistakes one by one and asked questions whenever something was unclear.
Two months later, I got an A in physics. More importantly, I finally understood what my headteacher meant: potential is not something you are born with and wait for; it is something you develop by facing difficulties bravely. The road ahead is long, but every small step counts.
24. How did the writer feel on the first day of senior high school?
A. Proud and satisfied. B. Calm and confident. C. Bored and tired. D. Excited and nervous.
25. What does the phrase “rise to” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. give up. B. run away from. C. deal with. D. laugh at.
26. What did the writer do to improve physics?
① Made a study plan ② Corrected mistakes carefully
③ Took many extra tests every day ④ Asked questions when confused
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Difficult Physics Test B. My First Day at School
C. Challenges Are Doors to Growth D. How to Please Your Teachers
C
More and more young people are choosing a new way to travel — “volunteer travel”. Volunteer travellers do not just visit a place. They also spend time helping the people and animals there.
Take Li Hua as an example. Two years ago, she went to a small town in Guizhou. Instead of staying in a hotel, she lived with a local family and taught children English for three weeks. “I wanted to see the real life there, not just the beautiful views,” she said. “Teaching those kids was hard work, but it made me really happy.”
Volunteer travel is becoming popular for several reasons. First, it is often cheaper than a normal trip, because volunteers may get free food and a free place to stay. Second, young people want to do something meaningful. They want to help others and learn new things at the same time. Third, it helps travellers understand different cultures in a deeper way.
However, volunteer travel is not always easy. Volunteers need to work hard and sometimes live in simple conditions. Some people may find it difficult to get used to the local food or the weather. So, before you start, think carefully about what you can do and what you really want.
For many young people, volunteer travel is more than a trip. It is a way to grow and to see the world with new eyes.
28. What is special about “volunteer travel”?
A. It is only for old people. B. It costs a lot of money.
C. Travellers help others while travelling. D. Travellers stay in big hotels.
29. What did Li Hua do in Guizhou?
A. She taught children English. B. She worked in a hotel.
C. She studied at a school. D. She took care of animals.
30. Which is NOT a reason why volunteer travel is popular?
A. It can be cheaper. B. It lets people do meaningful things.
C. It helps people understand cultures. D. It is always comfortable.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The meaning of volunteer travel. B. The cost of volunteer travel.
C. The history of volunteer travel. D. The danger of volunteer travel.
D
Time flies when you have fun on your smartphone. But when you sit down to work and study, an hour feels like a year. ________ It is all because of something small called dopamine which is a “joy chemical” that makes people feel good. Our brains release it when we eat yummy food, after we exercise or when we are praised.
Compared with studying, eating chocolate can make your brain release 150% more dopamine, and exercising for 30 minutes raises it by 200%. But using smartphones creates much more dopamine. For example, watching short videos gives a 250% increase, and checking new messages makes dopamine jump by 400% — much higher than studying. But why? When we go through social media, we don’t know what we’ll see next. This uncertainty makes dopamine active. Studying doesn’t provide such uncertainty. Without the excitement of “gambling (赌博)”, we get bored much more easily.
Can we do something to change that? According to research, apps can become less attractive if we turn off notifications (消息通知) or change the screen colours to black and white. We can also set time controls on apps. As for studying, you could check your progress daily or weekly and reward yourself for it. You could also explore interesting topics related to your textbooks.
32. Which of the following can be put in “________”?
A. Why is studying so important for our brains?
B. Why are we so easily tired of using smartphones?
C. Why is using a smartphone the best way to improve study?
D. Why are we so crazy about smartphones but easily bored with studying?
33. What does the underlined word “release” mean in the passage?
A. Recycle. B. Reduce. C. Produce. D. Attract.
34. Which of the following pictures shows the level of dopamine increase?
A. B.
C. D.
35. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. The Joy Source of Life: Dopamine B. The Cure of Screen Habit: Phone Tips
C. The Fun-Killer of Study: Dopamine D. The Cure for Boredom: Learning Plans

Mary was the only child of her parents. One day, she and her mother burst into a great quarrel. Mary rushed out of the house with anger. Walking up and down the street for a long time, she felt tired and hungry. There happened to be a middle-aged man selling noodles at a stand beside her. But she had to sigh and leave because of no money.
The man saw Mary and asked, “Hi, girl, would you like some noodles?”
“Yes, but no…I don’t have any money on me,” Mary answered.
“Then it will be my treat this time,” invited the seller.
The seller handed her a bowl of inviting noodles. Mary couldn’t wait to cat up all the yummy food…then, tears rolled down her face slowly.
“What’s wrong?” asked the seller considerately.
“Nothing,” Mary answered. “You are so kind!” Mary thanked the seller again and again when she cleaned her face. “Even a person who I came across in the street would care about me, while my mom just criticized me and drove me out of the house. I can’t understand why she is so mean and cruel to me!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times that she has cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?”
Mary was lost in deep thought; mom’s smiling face and rough hands emerged in her mind. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mom for what she has done for me.”

D 25. C 26. B 27. C
根据第一段中的“When I stepped into my new school on a bright September morning, I felt excited and nervous at the same time.(在九月一个晴朗的早晨,当我走进我的新学校时,我同时感到兴奋又紧张。)”
根据第二段中的“The path before you leads to a world full of challenges. However, for those of you with a positive mind, opportunity lies in each challenge. When you rise to the challenges, you will have the chance to acquire great knowledge and enjoy personal growth.(你们面前的道路通向一个充满挑战的世界。然而,对于拥有积极心态的你们来说,机遇蕴藏在每一次挑战之中。当你勇敢rise to挑战时,你将有机会收获丰富的知识并获得个人成长。)”可知,只有主动面对、处理挑战,才能获得知识、实现成长,由此推测“rise to”意为“应对、处理”。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Following her advice, I made a study plan, corrected my mistakes one by one and asked questions whenever something was unclear.(听从她的建议,我制定了学习计划,逐一改正错误,遇到不懂的地方就提问。)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“The path before you leads to a world full of challenges. However, for those of you with a positive mind, opportunity lies in each challenge. When you rise to the challenges, you will have the chance to acquire great knowledge and enjoy personal growth.(你们面前的道路通向一个充满挑战的世界。然而,对于拥有积极心态的你们来说,机遇蕴藏在每一次挑战之中。当你勇敢应对挑战时,你将有机会收获丰富的知识并获得个人成长。)”可知,文章围绕作者高中求学经历展开,讲述作者在挑战当中不断成长,点明挑战之中蕴藏机遇,所以“Challenges Are Doors to Growth(挑战是通往成长的大门)”最能概括全文核心,适合作为最佳标题。
C 29. A 30. D 31. A
根据第一段“Volunteer travellers do not just visit a place. They also spend time helping the people and animals there. (志愿者旅行者不只是游览一个地方,他们还会花时间帮助当地的人和动物。)”可知,志愿者旅行的特别之处是旅行者在旅行的同时帮助他人。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Take Li Hua as an example. Two years ago, she went to a small town in Guizhou. Instead of staying in a hotel, she lived with a local family and taught children English for three weeks. (以李华为例。两年前,她去了贵州的一个小镇。她没有住酒店,而是住在当地一户人家,教孩子们英语,为期三周。)”可知,李华在贵州教孩子们英语。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Volunteer travel is becoming popular for several reasons. First, it is often cheaper than a normal trip...Second, young people want to do something meaningful...Third, it helps travellers understand different cultures in a deeper way. (志愿者旅行正因几个原因而变得流行起来。首先,相比常规旅行,志愿者旅行通常更便宜……其次,年轻人希望做有意义的事……第三,这有助于旅行者更深入地了解不同的文化。)”可知,公益旅行受欢迎的三点原因:花费更低、做有意义的事、深入理解不同文化,“它总是很舒适”不是公益旅行受欢迎的原因。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“For many young people, volunteer travel is more than a trip. It is a way to grow and to see the world with new eyes. (对于许多年轻人来说,志愿者旅行不只是一场旅行。它是一种成长,用全新的视角看世界的方式。)”可知,本段主要讲述志愿者旅行的深层意义。
D 33. C 34. B 35. C
根据第一段中“Time flies when you have fun on your smartphone. But when you sit down to work and study, an hour feels like a year. (玩手机玩得开心时,时光总是飞逝。可当你坐下来学习工作,一小时却漫长得如同一年。)”以及后文“It is all because of something small called dopamine which is a ‘joy chemical’ that makes people feel good. (这都是因为一种名叫多巴胺的小分子物质,它是一种‘快乐化学物质’,能让人产生愉悦感。)”可知,空缺处需要承接上文“玩手机时时间飞逝、学习时时间难熬”的现象,提出疑问以引出下文的原因解释,D选项“Why are we so crazy about smartphones but easily bored with studying? (为什么我们如此痴迷于智能手机,却很容易厌倦学习?)”对应前文的矛盾现象,引出下文的原因解释,符合题意。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段中“It is all because of something small called dopamine which is a ‘joy chemical’ that makes people feel good. Our brains release it when we eat yummy food, after we exercise or when we are praised. (这都是因为一种名叫多巴胺的小分子物质,它是一种‘快乐化学物质’,能让人产生愉悦感。当我们品尝美食、运动结束或是受到夸奖时,大脑就会release这种物质。)”可知,多巴胺是能让人产生愉悦感的化学物质,当人们吃美食、运动、受到表扬时,大脑会分泌、释放这种物质,因此“release”的含义与“Produce”接近。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Compared with studying, eating chocolate can make your brain release 150% more dopamine, and exercising for 30 minutes raises it by 200%. But using smartphones creates much more dopamine. For example, watching short videos gives a 250% increase, and checking new messages makes dopamine jump by 400% — much higher than studying. (和学习相比,吃巧克力能让大脑多分泌150%的多巴胺,运动30分钟则会使多巴胺提升200%。而使用手机产生的多巴胺还要多得多。比如刷短视频,多巴胺会增加250%;查看新消息时,多巴胺直接飙升400%——远远高于学习时的水平。)”可知,吃巧克力使多巴胺增加150%,运动使多巴胺增加200%,查看新消息使多巴胺增加400%。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“It is all because of something small called dopamine which is a ‘joy chemical’ that makes people feel good. Our brains release it when we eat yummy food, after we exercise or when we are praised.

When Mary returned home, she decided to say sorry to her mom for her rude behavior.

Approaching the doorway, Mary took a deep breath. Her palms sweating and throat tightening, she knocked lightly on the door, thinking about what she was going to say to her mom. However, much to her confusion, there was no one answering the door. Having attempted for several times, she had no option but to give up. Slowly, she bent down, leaned against the door and curled herself up, tears of regret rolling down her cheeks like broken lines of beads. Memories of the past came flooding back like endless tide. It struck her that there were countless nights when she came back from school, mom would welcome her with the warmest embrace and get refreshments well-prepared in advance for her. “If only I hadn't been so rude to my mom,” she bit her lips uneasily, whispering to herself, head down.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head, only to find the familiar face and the worried eyes. “Here you come! I have been looking for you,” came the tired but relieved voice. Deeply moved, Mary couldn’t help throwing herself into her mom’s arms. “I’m so sorry for my rudeness and I have understood quite well all you have done for me.” Mary sobbed bitterly, expressing her apology and appreciation from the bottom of her heart, which she had never confided before. Hearing this, her mom cracked a smile, patting her back softly. It was not until that moment that Mary fully realized whatever happened, her mom would always be there for her!
