Have you ever dreamed of winning a big game at home? Zheng Qinwen made that dream come true — right in her own country.

On a Sunday night in October, Zheng faced the world No.4 player, Mirra Andreeva, in the final of the China Open. It was a very close match. She was down in the first set, but she kept fighting and won 7-5. In the second set, she played even better and won 6-4. With her last strong shot, she beat her opponent (对手) and became the first Chinese player ever to win this great prize — her first WTA 1000 title.

“The feeling was wonderful to win here in Beijing, in front of my home fans. It has been one of my dreams,” Zheng said.

But the road here was far from easy. In 2024, Zheng won China’s first Olympic tennis singles gold medal in Paris and reached world No.5. However, she hurt her elbow the next year, and she fell to No. 160 by June. Many people thought her rise had stopped.

Yet Zheng never gave up. At the US Open in New York, she won match after match to reach the quarterfinals (四分之一决赛) — including two amazing fights back from 0-5 down.

Her fighting spirit excited fans in China, and her win in Beijing was a perfect end to a hot Chinese tennis season. In fact, her comeback made the China Open a big success: the number of people who came is expected to pass 450,000, up 25 percent from last year, and ticket money hit a record 132 million yuan.

Zheng’s story tells us: no matter how low you fall, never stop believing in yourself. Keep fighting, and you may create your own miracle.

B. She gave up early and didn’t fight back in the second set.

C. She won the match and became the first Chinese player to lift the title.

D. She played well and beat the world No. 4 player in the first set.

Thousands of years ago, texts appeared on animal bones and bamboo before they were written on paper. Now ancient Chinese texts have a “new container” in the modern age. Recently, a research team from Nanjing Agricultural University together with Gulian, a leading ancient Chinese text publisher, introduced a large language model called Xunzi.

“Traditional Chinese characters and the absence of punctuation marks (标点符号) are always making reading traditional texts hard,” said Wang Dongbo, who led the research, explaining why they built this model. “With it, we hope more readers will be able to step into the world of these ancient texts.”

To create this model, Wang and his partners did a lot of research on Chinese classics like Siku Quanshu (《四库全书》).“We had to work on two billion Chinese characters and our work gave us a good start,” said Wang. It was no easy job. The researchers needed to study these classics first and then mark words into different types, like adjectives and nouns, to feed into the model.

But their effort seems to be paying off. Now, the model can help users understand and study ancient Chinese texts. For example, when users type “shangu” into the chat box, they will learn that it means “valley” and that it could also be a person’s courtesy name (字) in ancient Chinese texts. “The model can help us dig out more information hidden in our cultural legacy (文化遗产) and find unnoticed connections,” said Wang.

It was named after Xunzi, a great philosopher of the late Warring States Period (战国时期). He is also believed to be one of the fathers of ancient Chinese linguistics (语言学).

Wang Dongbo and his team not only help Chinese people explore ancient Chinese texts but also share them with the world. They put the model on websites like GitHub for free download. “Our team has been sharing this resource with the world so that more people will learn about traditional Chinese culture,” said Wang.page number 2
