Online eating shows, or Mukbang, were originated in South Korea and have gained popularity globally. Many hosts of such shows become popular for their ability to eat large amounts of food. However, these shows have also received criticism for their waste of food. While some hosts actually do consume the amount of food shown, others may be faking it. On Aug 12, CCTV exposed several Chinese hosts who were eating large amounts of food while on camera, but actually later threw it away.
To discourage this practice, many video and live streaming platforms, including Douyin, Kuaishou and Bilibili, have removed videos that show food waste, and have promoted messages to “avoid food waste and eat reasonably”.
In June 2020, the United Nations warned that the world is on the verge of the worst food crisis in 50 years. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, about a third of the world’s food — 1.3 billion tons — is wasted every year. In China alone, 50 million tons of food ends up in landfills every year, according to Beijing News.
Recently, campaigns against food waste have been further promoted. In August, President Xi Jinping stressed the need for safeguarding food security and avoiding food waste.
According to China Daily, restaurants and catering associations in more than 18 provinces and all 4 municipal cities have issued guidelines to control food waste.
In Shaanxi province, local restaurants have been asked to serve half portions to avoid waste. The Wuhan Catering Association proposed that restaurants adopt the “N-1 mode”. For example, a group of 10 diners should only order enough for nine people at first. More food is only brought to the table if required.
In addition, a nationwide “Clear Your Plate” campaign has been launched online. Users of Sina Weibo are encouraged to share photos or videos of empty plates after finishing their meals.

A. Criticizing. B. Pretending.

D. Because the world is on the verge of the worst food crisis in 50 years.
26. Which of the following campaigns has been promoted to fight against food waste?

It’s known to all that coffee can make you feel more awake, and now it seems that coffee may also improve your maths skills. And the best news is that you don’t even need to drink it to see the improvements — you just need to smell it. Coffee is actually very healthy. It is loaded with antioxidants and beneficial nutrients that can improve your health. The studies show that coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of developing several serious diseases.
A new study by researchers from Stevens Institute of Technology has revealed that the scent of coffee may help your maths skills. Professor Adriana Madzharov, who led the study, said: “It’s not just that the coffee-like scent helped people perform better on analytical tasks, which was already interesting. But they also thought they would do better, and we proved that this expectation was at least partly responsible for their improved performance.”
In the study, 100 business students took a 10-question algebra test. Half the group took the test in the presence of a coffee-like scent, while the other half took the test in an unscented room. The results revealed that the group in the coffee-smelling room scored significantly higher on the test than those in the unscented room.
In a follow-up study, the researchers quizzed 200 new participants on their belief about various scents and their effects on human performance. Their answers showed that they believed they would feel alert in the presence of a coffee scent. This suggests that their expectations about performance may have influenced their improved skills.
The researchers believe that the findings could have major effects on the real world. Professor Madzharov added: “Olfaction is one of our most powerful senses. Employers, architects, building developers, retail space managers and others can use subtle scents to help shape employees’ or occupants’ experience with their environment. It’s an area of great interest and potential.”
28. Which of the following best explains “scent” underlined in Paragraph 2?
A. Smell. B. Flavor.
C. Taste. D. Fragrant.
29. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?
A. Summarize the previous paragraphs.
B. Provide some evidence for the findings.
C. Add some background information.
D. Introduce a new topic for discussion.
30. What can we infer from the passage?
A. 200 new participants took a 10-question maths test.
B. 100 business students thought they would feel more alert in the presence of a coffee scent.
C. 150 new participants believed coffee have influenced their improved skills.
D. 50 business students scored higher in the maths test with the presence of coffee than those without the scent of coffee.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Coffee is Very Healthy
B. The New Function of Coffee
C. The New Findings of Coffee Will Affect the World
D. The Scent of Coffee May Help One’s Maths Skills

With fingers and wrists wrapped in medicated tape, Zhang Guimei, founder and principal of the first free high school for girls in China, was presented with the July 1 Medal on Tuesday.
Zhang met her husband in Dali and worked as a teacher in a local school. Unfortunately, her husband died of cancer not long after their marriage. Sadly, Zhang decided to leave this familiar place. Therefore, she volunteered to teach at a middle school in Huaping, a poverty-stricken county located in the mountains.
Over time, Zhang witnessed the gender gap in education in relatively poor rural areas. Urban and rural students already faced unequal access to quality education, and the traditional belief of male superiority worsened rural girls’ situation. She discovered many girls were pulled out of class for many reasons just before the college entrance exam.
In 2002, Zhang came up with an idea to found a free high school for girls. In 2008, with help from the Party and the local government and personal donations, she founded the Huaping All-Girls High School. With the goal of never letting a girl fall behind in schooling, she often works overtime despite of illnesses. She has walked to almost every household deep in the mountains, talking to the parents about the importance of education for girls.
The efforts paid off. Over the past 13 years, her school has sent 1,800 girls to university. “A cultured, responsible mother won’t let her daughter drop out of school,” Zhang said.
32. What probably made Zhang Guimei decide to leave the local school in Dali?
A. Her loss of husband. B. Her desire for exploration.
C. Her love for teaching. D. Her eagerness for adventure.
33. What can we learn about the Huaping All-Girls High School?
A. It was founded in 2002.
B. It accepts both boys and girls.
C. It was founded with the help of the local government.
D. It aimed to narrow down the gender inequality in education.
34. Which of the following words can best describe Zhang Guimei?
A. Determined. B. Pessimistic. C. Economical. D. Outspoken.
35. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. A free high school for girls was successfully set up.
B. A woman with illnesses faces ups and downs in life.
C. The gender gap in education in rural China is bridged.
D. A woman’s devotion to girls’ education finally paid off.

Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do — mine was Mrs White.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. I would bring back what I wrote, and she would look at it and see that there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a “Good!” was scrawled (潦草地写), which would make my heart soar with happiness. But it worried my mother, so one day when she went in to meet Mrs White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes.
And my mother said Mrs White said — The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. I don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait. The wonder of words won’t ... And what my mother gave me was the gist of what she could remember. The rest I added in. Because I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence like that.
And it occurs to me that if Mrs White had used her red pen more precisely, I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher — to exercise such red-pen-restraint. To allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression flower — however faultily — like that. Because to bloom is better than not to bloom. And a bud once nipped (掐) never opens. May we all be so kind ...
I used to misspell “beautiful” a lot. I never could quite remember that the e went before the a. It exasperated (使气愤) my teacher in high school no end. Eventually the e’s and a’s settled into their right places of their own accord. I’m glad I didn’t wait on them though.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸相应位置作答。
Thirty years later, I attended a local education seminar as a famous writer.

Hello boys and girls, welcome to the library. I am delighted to be your guide today. The library will be the place where you will spend most of your school time. The Advantages and Disadvantages of the Interne
The Internet has profoundly changed our lives with both merits and demerits.
On the bright side, it provides abundant information for study and research, helping learners and researchers gain knowledge easily. It also facilitates communication — people can connect with others worldwide via apps. Besides, online shopping and entertainment save time, letting us buy goods or watch videos at home.
However, it brings problems. Long use harms eyes and posture. False information spreads fast, and cyber crimes exist. What’s more, personal privacy is at risk of being leaked.
In my view, we should make rational use of the Internet, leveraging its benefits while avoiding its pitfalls.

Thirty years later, I attended a local education seminar as a famous writer. As I walked into the venue, a familiar figure caught my eye — an elderly lady whom I recognized immediately as Mrs White. My heart raced with excitement. I approached her tentatively, and when she turned around, those warm eyes lit up with recognition. “Li Hua? Is that really you?” she asked softly. I nodded eagerly, introducing myself as the little girl who used to misspell “beautiful” as “baeutiful” but never lost her love for writing, all thanks to her.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I hugged Mrs White tightly. I told her how her red-pen-restraint had shaped my life, allowing me to express freely without fear of mistakes. She smiled gently, patting my back. “I always knew you’d make good use of words,” she said. “Spelling can be fixed, but passion can’t be restored once crushed.” Before we parted, I handed her a copy of my latest book, inscribed with “To Mrs White — Thank you for letting my words bloom.” As I watched her leave, I realized her kindness wasn’t just a memory; it was a gift that had kept on giving.
