1. W: Did you forget to do the laundry?
M: No, I did start the washing machine.
W: But there are no clothes hanging in the yard.
M: Oh no! The clothes are still in the washing machine!
2. W: Hi, this is Maria Cook. I just received a message saying my package has arrived. But there’s nothing at the front door.
M: The elevator in your building is broken. I’m climbing the stairs now. Please don’t leave your house. I’ll arrive in a minute.
3. W: What a terrible washing machine! It’s getting worse today. Look! Now it doesn’t work at all. I think I need a new one.
M: Calm down, please. I heard there’s a big sale in Star Mall today.
4. M: Did you manage to buy anything nice for Linda’s birthday?
W: Well, I thought about getting her something to wear, but I couldn’t find anything in her size, so in the end, I bought her two concert tickets.
5. W: Look, there’s a map. What would you like to see first, the monkeys or the tigers?
M: Actually, how about we see the lions first? Look, there’s a list of feeding times. If we hurry, we’ll catch them eating!
6-7. W: Hello, this is Lisa calling. I booked a flight to Paris from your travel agency last week.
M: Hello, Lisa. Let me check your information. Your trip is on October 12th, right?
W: Actually, I’m calling to change the date. I have an important meeting to attend that day, so I can’t go until next weekend.
M: OK, let me see. We have seats available on October 15th and 20th. Which one do you prefer?
W: October 15th, please. Thank you very much.
M: You’re welcome.
8-9. M: Mom, why do people get Labor Day off?
W: Well, Jim. It’s the day we honor working Americans. Back in the late 1800s, many Americans were working long hours under poor conditions. People protested to have better working conditions and a special holiday was created for workers. In 1894, Labor Day became a national holiday.
M: So, people have a day off from work?
W: Yes. Many businesses close and companies let people take a day off. Post offices and banks are closed.
M: And, schools are closed, too?
W: Yes. Schools are not open on this day, either.
M: Is it always in September?
W: Yes. It’s always the first Monday in September.
10-12. W: What are you doing on your computer?
M: I’m reading some news. I love reading online news.
W: So what have you just read?
M: Some news about a group’s effort to clean the Lasacas river near Guatemala city.
W: Sounds interesting. Could you tell me more about it?
M: A non-profit group named the ocean cleanup has set up a steel screen on each side of the river to prevent rubbish from entering the river.
W: Is it helpful?
M: Yes, the device has caught so much rubbish.
W: That’s amazing. Why is there so much rubbish?
M: There might have been less rubbish entering the river, although more and more plastic products are being used in our daily life. But when the rainy season begins in May and lasts several months, levels of pollution in the river
increase and the rubbish flows farther and faster.
W: Well, I do think it’s a good way to help rivers stay clean.
M: I agree.
13-16. W: What a beautiful painting. Is it of a real place?
M: No, I invented it myself. That’s why I love landscape painting. Unlike drawing specific objects or people, you can paint the landscape according to your own preferences.
W: May I watch you work for a while?
M: Sure, but why just watch? Why not have a go yourself?
W: May I? Really?
M: Absolutely, just sit down here and get comfortable. Here’s some paper. I’ll just get you a brush, plus an ink stick and an ink stone. The stone is used to mix the ink with water. You can place these tools like I do.
W: Wow, the brush is so soft.
M: Yes, it is the softest of all brushes. This kind of brushes is made of sheep hair. The brushes made of rabbit hair or horse hair are harder.
W: Well, what should I do next?
M: We’ll start by learning a few painting techniques and we’ll end up with the painting of a flowering tree branch. You can take the painting home when you finish it.
W: That’s great. I can’t believe I’m actually doing this.
17-20.
W: Well, thank you everyone for your interest in our Pyrenean Charity Challenge.
So, what are you signing up for? We’ll walk from Wednesday to Friday through the beautiful scenery of the Spanish Pyrenees. The route will take us through a variety of landscapes: first we’ll follow an amazing path along the coast. Then we’ll head away from the coast and walk through hills and forest. We will walk about 15 kilometers per day. It should take us about six to seven hours. Each day’s walking will start from one hotel and finish at the next hotel on the route. We’ll walk at a leisurely speed, so this challenge is no problem if you’re a fit and active person. Previous experience is useful, but it’s not absolutely necessary. We will have an experienced leader who’s fully trained and knows the route.
What will you need to take? The most important item you’ll need is good walking boots. You should buy them well in advance to make sure they fit well. You’ll need a waterproof jacket to keep you dry and warm and walking shorts are a good idea. You will also need a small backpack to carry your lunch and a water bottle.
56. achievement 57. that / which 58. for 59. their 60. committed 61. boiling
62. more careful 63. a 64. destroyed 65. to draw
66. One possible version:
Healthy Habits
I think healthy habits are very important for us. As we know, healthy habits will bring us good health. How can we develop healthy habits? First, we must keep a balanced diet. Eating too much or too little, or choosing wrong food may cause many illnesses. Second, we should take exercise every day. Doing sports an hour a day is a way to keep us fit. Finally, we’d better go to bed early and get up early. We should have at least eight hours’ sleep every night. As long as we have healthy habits, it will be easy for us to keep healthy and enjoy life.
67.
One night while Andrew was falling asleep, he heard a loud bang as the door shut. He ran to the corridor to find out what had happened. What he saw shocked him. He saw his mother lying unconscious by the door, her clothes stained with grease from her double shifts at the diner. Andrew carried her to bed and gave her some water. Anita told him she had taken on another job to bring in extra money.
Looking at her pale face, Andrew understood how hard she had worked. He felt guilty when he remembered how badly he had treated her. He took her hand and whispered, “I’m sorry, Mom.” From that day on, Andrew began helping with household chores. As the days went by, Andrew even found a part-time job to help pay the bills. Anita was very proud of the young man Andrew was becoming. What pleased her most was that he didn’t talk about it — his actions spoke for themselves.

A study recently published in Science shows that skyglow (天空光) is increasing much faster than expected based on observational data acquired from satellites.
The first author of the study Kyba and colleagues said, the global average increase calculated is in fact 9.6%, almost five times faster than previously believed. The two continental areas most polluted by artificial light, North America and Europe, see annual growth of 10.4% and 6.5%, respectively. Kyba declares that if the skyglow continues to increase at the current rate, a child born in a place where there are 250 stars will be able to see no more than 100 on his/ her18th birthday and will not see any more before reaching middle age.
The skyglow problem is no less serious than the pollution of the air we breathe or the plastic that adds in the seas and ends up in the food chain. All the great civilizations of the past have developed thanks to the vision of the celestial vault (天穹) and the cyclical (周期的) phenomena it shows. Agriculture, herding, navigation, and several other human activities have benefited greatly from viewing the night sky. We would know practically nothing about the universe if we hadn’t had the opportunity, until now, to observe it and to analyze the light that comes from everything in it.
The view of the starry sky, a common human legacy (遗产) over thousands of years, has been all but lost to most people now living in urban and suburban settings. It is estimated that over 80% of the world’s population live in an urban environment that is so brightened by artificial light as to have negative effects on their health: sleep disturbances, obesity, and some other types of diseases. And it’s not just humans who suffer from light pollution. Nocturnal (夜间活动的) animals, in particular, find themselves forced to change their habits or habitats. Skyglow can also affect the timing of migrations (迁徙) and other seasonal behaviors by disrupting biological clocks.
Only the most ignorant human beings can think that artificial light is only progress and not even a problem that needs to be solved as much as possible. Unfortunately, ignorance generates more ignorance.
24. What can be inferred according to Kyba?
A. The skyglow will definitely increase at the same rate.
B. Europe sees annual growth of 10. 4% in artificial light.
C. Fewer stars will be seen if skyglow continues to increase.
D. The previous global average increase of skyglow was about 48%.
25. What does the author want to say by mentioning human activities like agriculture?
A. The increase of skyglow in recent years.
B. The significance of viewing the night sky.
C. The seriousness of air and plastic pollution.
D. The necessity of knowing about the universe.
26. Which is closest in meaning to “disrupting” in paragraph 4?
A. Setting. B. Adjusting. C. Slowing. D. Disturbing.
27. What is the writer’s attitude towards the result of the study?
A. Unclear. B. Uncaring. C. Concerned. D. Approving.
C
The arts, especially music, should be part of every school’s lessons at every grade level. Students would be much smarter if they had some musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following directions. People develop all these skills when they learn music. Making music also lets children use their imagination. It provides students with a chance to try out their own ideas.
Music not only makes children better students, but also gives them something positive to do. In a music program, children can be part of a band instead of joining a gang (团伙). Parents can enjoy listening to their children’s music instead of seeing them glued to a computer or TV screen. In a school band, students get to be part of a team. They can get along well with old friends and make new friends through music.
Music builds self-confidence, too. It gives children a sense of achievement and success. Making music is something for them to be proud of, and it lets kids practice performing in front of an audience. Music gives children an opportunity for self-expression, and that helps develop their self-confidence.
Once again, music is important because it can make children better students, give them something positive to do, and build their character. That is why music should be offered in every single grade in every school.
28. According to the passage, music could make students smarter by .
A. improving their classroom skills and attention
B. improving their classroom skills and imagination
C. improving their attention, direction and imagination
D. learning music, making music and trying out their own ideas
29. What does the underlined phrase “glued to” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Unwilling to turn on. B. Always looking.
C. Unwilling to leave. D. Always playing.
30. The third paragraph mainly tells us that music could .
A. give children self-expression and self-confidence B. bring to children achievement and success
C. give children something to be proud of D. develop children’s self-confidence
31. What’s the best title of this passage?
A. Music Is a Must As a Course at School
B. Music Builds Children’s Self-confidence
C. Music Makes Students Much Smarter
D. Learning Music and Making Music

There was a lot of news related to artificial intelligence, or AI, and machine learning. Among the stories were two dealing with direct competitions between humans and machines.
In one competition, machines that used AI performed better than human beings in a high-level reading test. Two natural language processing tools beat human in the experiment. One of the tools was built by the American technology company Microsoft. The other was created by Chinese online seller Alibaba Group.
In another competition, a computer took on humans in live, public debates. The event demonstrated how AI-powered computers are increasingly being developed to think and sound like humans. The organizer of the debates, U. S. technology company IBM, announced distinct results. It said a majority of the audience said they felt the machine had done more to improve their knowledge of the subject. But, the human got more praise for communicating their ideas.
This year, we also explored many ways in which AI and machine learning are now being used in. For example, some U. S. judges use machine learning systems to help them decide when, and for how long criminals should be jailed. The system uses computers to analyse data from thousands of court cases efficiently.
One fast-growing area of AI is facial recognition, which is increasingly being used for security purposes. Recently, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport became the first in the U.S. to permit passengers to use facial recognition technology to get on flights. A Chinese company makes use of an AI system it developed to recognize individuals by body shape and walking movements. The system is already being used by Chinese police in Beijing and Shanghai.
In addition, machine learning was used during 2018 to predict results of the World Cup soccer competition. The technology also created artwork that sold for a large amount of money. And it is being used to provide accurate data to help farmer save time and money, while reducing environment-harming chemicals. Other technology systems are being used to follow farm animals and wildlife to collect information on their activities.
32. Why were the two competitions mentioned in the passage?
A. To show humans have more advantages over AI and machine learning in communication and reading skills.
B. To prove AI and machine Learning got more praise for communication.
C. To show how powerful AI and machine Learning are.
D. To prove AI and machine learning have been used in the work of U. S. judges.
33. What are facial and body recognition systems used for in the passage?
A. Knowledge learning. B. Safety control. C. Office automation. D. Tracking survey.
34. What can we infer from this passage?
A. AI has been widely used in every person’s daily life.
B. Human can be replaced by AI in future completely.
C. More attention is being paid to AI in every part of the world.
D. More advanced AI is helping people in more and more areas.
35. Where is the text probably from?
A. A technology report. B. A natural science magazine.
C. A science fiction. D. A government document.

Benefits of Traveling with Your Parents
Traveling with your parents as an adult, you can explore new places and share special moments together that you can look back on with a smile. 36 According to a magazine, such trips can help rewrite old stories, deepen understanding, and strengthen your bond.

· 39
Traveling with aging parents isn’t always simple due to schedules and different energy levels and interests. However, moments like laughter, quiet conversations, and viewing the same sight are deeply meaningful. Editor Dontaira Terrell says that traveling with her father filled her with gratitude and served as a reminder of the gift of time.
·You carry legacies (遗产) forward.
A shared trip also provides the opportunity to see the world through your parents’ eyes. For Terrell, her trip was a chance to experience historical sites and reconnect with her roots. 40 Her experience traveling with her father taught her that legacy lies in moments.

Andrew, 13, lived with his single mother, Anita. His father passed away three years ago. Anita had since done everything she could to raise Andrew on her own. Anita had never worked outside the home. Her husband, a computer engineer whose pay had once been good, had given them a comfortable life.
Unluckily, things did not go as planned. After her husband’s passing, Anita had to support the family. She worked two jobs just to keep food on the table. Anita never told her son about the family’s financial struggles (经济困难). She wanted to give her son a good life, but no matter how hard she tried, it never seemed enough.
One day, while shopping for Sunday’s dinner at the supermarket, Andrew saw a pair of shoes he had been longing for and asked his mother to buy them. It was mid-month, and Anita was short of money.
“Mom, please! They’re just a pair of shoes,” Andrew said. “I’m sorry, Andrew. I can’t afford them right now. Maybe next time,” Anita replied softly. “That’s not fair! You never have enough!” Andrew shouted. He kicked the shopping cart (购物车). “You work every day, so why are we still poor? If you can’t buy me anything, what do you go to work for? All my friends get what they want. I can’t even get shoes because of you!”
Andrew’s words cut Anita deeply. She reminded herself that Andrew was too young to understand her efforts. They had always depended on each other. What hurt her most was that he seemed not to care about their closeness. Andrew had always complained (抱怨) about their financial troubles, but he had never spoken to her like that before. Anita felt as if the weight of all their problems had landed on her at once. Andrew was the center of her life, but he saw her as nothing but the thorn (刺) in his happiness. She said to herself, “It’s okay, Anita. Work harder. One day he’ll understand.”注意:

(2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
One night while Andrew was falling asleep, he heard a loud bang as the door shut.
Looking at her pale face, Andrew understood how hard she had worked.
