It started in a jeep, on an ordinary ride home from school. Sixth grader Harrison Burgess sat in the car, with his dad listening to news reports about the deadly wildfires in Los Angeles. His heart sank. But unlike most moments that passed in his daily life, this one stayed with him.
“I told my dad I wanted to do something to help,” Harrison recalled. “People had lost everything. I couldn’t just sit with that.”
Years earlier, Harrison’s father had lost his childhood home to a house fire. Harrison remembered hearing how the Red Cross had stepped in when everything was gone. “That story made it real for me,” Harrison said. “I wanted to help people in the same situation my dad had been in.”
Harrison approached the principal of his school, Steve Ruthford, and together they created a plan to raise funds for the Red Cross. Still, Harrison had to face his own fear. “I have stage fright,” he admitted. “But I stood in front of my classmates and talked about the fundraiser anyway. My teachers were there for support, and that helped.”
With posters, morning announcements, and a donation jar in the office, the campaign took off. Slowly, coins and bills poured in — each one a testament (证明) to the generosity of students, teachers, and families who believed in the cause.
“I was really surprised by how much we raised,” Harrison said. What mattered most to Harrison was that many people joined him. “I wasn’t the only one who helped,” he said. “My parents, friends, and teachers — so many people made this happen. It took a community to do big things.”
“I don’t really know my role in the world yet,” Harrison said. “But this helps me figure it out. I know I want to have a positive impact.” To the families who may receive the money, Harrison would simply say, “I’m glad we could help you in a tough time.”
4. How did Harrison feel when he heard about the wildfires?
A. Distant. B. Curious. C. Concerned. D. Scared.
5. Why did Harrison decide to launch the campaign?
A. He was moved by the survivors’ courage.
B. He was inspired by his father’s experience.
C. He was encouraged by his teachers’ support.
D. He was amazed by the Red Cross’s kindness to Steve.
6. What did Harrison want to emphasize about the campaign in paragraph 6?
A. It was promoted through combined efforts.
B. It required plenty of careful planning.
C. It erased public doubt about him.
D. It enabled people to honor him.
7. What can we learn from the story?
A. A hardship can shape one’s character.
B. A shared goal has a short-lived effect.
C. A brave choice can affect one’s future.
D. A small act can make a big difference.

What do you get if you put an emotional support animal and a robot vacuum cleaner together? You may get something such as a new robot, and at first sight, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s simply a new and improved robo-pet.
But its creators — a team that includes robotics engineers — say it’s more than that. They say the new robot is an “AI system designed to adapt and interact with people in ways that feel natural”.
Colin Angle, the CEO of a company, said, “The new robots represent a step forward in robotics. The next era (时代) of robotics is not just about dexterity (灵巧) or humanoid form — it’s about machines that can build and keep human connections.”
Then, how is the new robot different from any other object someone could grow attached to?
Ira Renfrew, co-founder of the company that makes it, said, “We want something that becomes part of your world over time, not a small tool or an appliance. The new robot can perceive (察觉) its environment, develop distinct personalities, and respond in ways that change through life alongside the people around them. The new robot is designed for anyone who would like a positive, caring presence in their household. It is for the moments when you need some company, comfort or even gentle coaching.”
However, some professionals have voiced serious worries about the robot. They believe that spending too much time with it may stop people from communicating with others in real life. Besides, the robot’s fixed emotional responses cannot solve people’s real problems, which affects people’s ability to deal with daily difficulties.
Renfrew explains, “The honest measure of whether my team has succeeded isn’t how much time you spend with the new robots, nor whether you become more attached to the machines. The success lies in whether you finally become more connected to your life. These are tools that help you live a little better without taking over your life.”
8. What is Angle’s attitude toward the new robots?
A. Positive. B. Critical. C. Objective. D. Uncertain.
9. What is a feature of the new robot from paragraph 5?
A. It can do all housework.
B. It can learn to offer emotional support.
C. It can predict people’s diverse needs.
D. It can help improve people’s personalities.
10. What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. The advantages of the robo-pet. B. The application of the new robot.
C. Scientists’ views on smart tools. D. Professionals’ concern about the new robot.
11. What does Renfrew want to emphasize about the new robots at last?
A. They will take over people’s life.
B. They will change most human relationships.
C. They are meant for supporting people’s real-life connections.
D. Their success depends on how much time users spend with them.
D
Marla, a sheepdog owned by Princeton biologist Bridgett von Holdt, seems ready to make friends with everyone she meets. Her owner’s interest in her is not only personal. For years, Bridgett and her team have studied an important question: Why are dogs, compared with wolves raised in similar conditions, usually more willing to turn to humans, follow signs, and stay close to us?
Earlier studies showed that dogs and wolves do not act in the same way around people. Bridgett, whose work is in evolutionary genetics, wanted to know whether these differences in demeanor might be connected with certain genes that changed during domestication (驯养).
In 2010, working with animal behaviorist Monique Udell, Bridgett searched the genomes (基因组) of dogs and wolves, and identified alterations in the WBSCR17 gene that occurred during dog domestication. And in 2014 they began a new experiment with 18 dogs and 10 wolves habituated to humans. All the animals were taught to open a box with a piece of sausage inside. Then they were tested in three situations: with a familiar person, with a stranger, and alone.
The wolves did better than the dogs in every test, and the difference became even greater when people were nearby, because the dogs often stopped working and looked at the humans instead of the box. As Bridgett explained, “It’s not that they couldn’t solve the puzzle; they were just too busy looking at the humans to do it.”
Later, Bridgett carried out further genetic research on the part of the genome around the WBSCR17 gene in a larger group of dogs and wolves. She found that WBSCR17 was different in the two animals, and that two nearby genes, GTF2I and GTF2IRD1, were also not the same. Together with the behavioral results, these findings suggested that changes in this gene region may have played an important part in making dogs more social and closer to humans.
Still, some scientists warned that the study was small. Even so, the research gives a clearer picture of how dogs changed and reminds us that human choices still matter today. This may help us raise dogs in healthier, kinder, and more responsible ways.
12. What does the underlined word “demeanor” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Emotion. B. Intelligence. C. Behavior. D. Appearance.
13. How did Bridgett get the findings?
A. By observing dogs daily. B. By conducting research.
C. By reading earlier studies. D. By interviewing dog owners.
14. What aspect of the research is discussed in the last paragraph?
A. Its significance. B. Its methods. C. Its application. D. Its process.
15. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Why Are Dogs So Friendly?
B. How Did Dogs Become Our Pets?
C. Why Do Wolves Perform Better in Tests?
D. How Did Dogs Change During Domestication?

When my husband Andy and I moved to Hawaii, we knew nobody. One evening, piano music drifted (飘) through our apartment wall. Curious about the player, we knocked on our neighbor’s door. A thin, white-haired man welcomed us. His name was Derek, and he was ninety-seven. Beside his piano stood a photograph of a smiling woman. “My wife,” he explained. “She passed away last year. She never missed a performance.” He touched the frame, and then changed the subject.
Before we left, Andy invited him to dinner. Derek hesitated and said, “Only if you let me provide the entertainment.” That was how “dinner and a show” began. Every month, we brought pizza to his apartment. Derek placed handwritten programs on our chairs and performed songs he had learned. We clapped after each piece, and he bowed like a professional musician. Soon, we were planning our weekends around those evenings.
With his permission, I once filmed a performance and posted it online. Then work got busy, and I forgot to check the video. At our next dinner, Derek announced a special piece — his wife’s favorite. He began confidently, but halfway through, his fingers struck several wrong notes. He stopped, rubbed his hands and tried again. Once more, he struggled at the same point. “Take your time,” I said gently. Instead, he closed the piano lid (盖). “She used to say my hands could make any song beautiful.” He looked at them. “Perhaps those days are over.”
A week later, a note appeared under our door: “Please don’t bring dinner next month. There will be no show.” I knocked on his door, but he only called out that he needed some rest. The following evenings, no music came through the wall.
Back home, I opened the video, hoping to hear him play again. To my surprise, hundreds of strangers had left messages. I began reading. Then I called Andy over and turned the screen toward him.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
That evening, Andy and I arrived at Derek’s door with pizza and my laptop.

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C

【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. A

A Hero in My Heart
My father is a hero in my heart. He works as a community volunteer in his spare time. On weekends, he helps the elderly buy daily goods and cares about their health. When neighbors meet with trouble, he is always ready to lend a hand. He never expects anything in return.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】例文
That evening, Andy and I arrived at Derek’s door with pizza and my laptop. Derek hesitated before letting us in. While Andy unpacked the food on the small table, I opened the video and read the comments aloud. People wrote about warm memories Derek’s music had awakened and the gentle comfort it had brought them. Derek leaned toward the screen, reading each message carefully. Gradually, his shoulders relaxed and tears gathered in his eyes. I gently explained that we treasured his company far more than a perfect performance.
Derek looked at us, and then slowly opened the piano lid. His fingers touched the keys softly, and his wife’s favorite song filled the quiet room. At the difficult passage, he paused and glanced nervously at us. Our encouraging smiles helped him keep going. There were still wrong notes, but he bravely played the song to the end. We applauded warmly, and a familiar smile returned to his face. After dinner, he reached for a fresh sheet of paper and began writing the program for our next visit happily.
