On a warm afternoon by the West Lake in Hangzhou, a white-haired old man was chatting confidently with a foreign visitor in English. He was introducing the city’s “English corner” to the foreign visitor. The old man, named Zhou Panlin, is 98 years old. Later, their conversation got a lot of attention online. Many people praised it as a perfect example of lifelong learning.
Grandpa Zhou discovered the English corner about seven or eight years ago. He used to be a university teacher, teaching chemistry and English. Today, nearing 100, Zhou still keeps his mind sharp with daily habits: reading English books at home and looking through English-language news online.
Almost every weekend, he goes to the West Lake. He believes it is important to go outside to meet people and stay connected with society. At the English corner, Zhou talks about Chinese culture and food with people happily.
