On an August night, you go out for dinner and order the squid, the “king of the night market”. It smells good and tastes even better. While you’re enjoying the squid, it is hard to imagine that this delicious treat was once the king of the ocean.
About 470 million years ago, when most of the Earth was covered by sea, the squid’s ancestors (祖先) were the powerful kings of the sea, and Cameroceras was one of them.
This huge animal was about 10 meters long, with a hard shell (壳) like a tall tower. Inside the big shell were about 40 small rooms. A long tube went through all the rooms. By putting air or water into them, the tube helped Cameroceras go up, down, or stay in the water freely. With this special skill, it could catch any animal it wanted in the ancient ocean.
Trilobites (三叶虫), the most common animals in the ocean at that time, were Cameroceras’ favourite food. Even though trilobites had hard shells, they could be eaten easily by Cameroceras’ strong mouths.
Cameroceras finally died out. About 443 million years ago, a big disaster (灾难) killed many sea animals. Cameroceras did not have enough food to feed themselves. They became smaller and fewer in number. However, some of them made a brave choice: they threw away their heavy outer shells to live! Over millions of years, they slowly changed, and the squid we know today appeared.
Today, squids are small and have no hard shells. They are not kings of the sea any more, but they have lived for a very long time by keeping changing to fit the environment.

My brother Tim and I each have our own room. Tim’s is messy but mine is tidy. By Saturday of each week, the floor of Tim’s room is covered with dirty clothes, books and toys.
On Saturday afternoons, Tim and I like to play baseball with our friends. Tim always asks me to help him clean in the morning, and I usually help him, because Tim is the best player on our team. Without him, our team couldn’t win.
Last Saturday, my friend Gretchen asked me to go out to watch a film with her. I told Tim to start cleaning his room early that morning, but nothing changed. His room was such a mess that I had to stay behind and clean it for him. So I had to tell Gretchen I couldn’t make it. I was a little upset—I really wanted to hang out with her instead of tidying up.
I decided that I wouldn’t let Tim’s disorderly habits change my plans. I bought three big boxes and took them to Tim’s room. On the first box, I wrote “clothes”. On the second box, I wrote “books and toys”. On the third box I wrote “rubbish”.
For several days, I followed Tim at home. I pointed to the clothes or toys on the floor and said, “Put them in the right box!” Tim then remembered to do it on his own.
When Saturday came, we took the clothes from the first box to the laundry. Then we put the books on the shelf and the toys in the toy box. Lastly, we threw the rubbish away. I finally had time to hang out with Gretchen. Tim’s room was finally clean too. Sometimes, a good way can make a big difference.

③ Tim and the writer got the clothes washed. ④ Tim and the writer threw the rubbish.

As night falls, the sound of drums (鼓) fills the air as an 8-meter fish-shaped lantern (灯笼), followed by a team of smaller ones, parades (游行) through the streets of Wangmantian village, in East China’s Anhui Province. The lantern parade dances in the moonlight, like fish running after the moon in the water.
In the crowd, 27-year-old villager Wang Lijun leads the lantern show. People call him the “head fish”. In the past, only old villagers could take this job. Now many young people come back home and work for the show for free. “This tradition brings us close. More young villagers like me return home.
19. What do we know about Cameroceras?
A. It lived on land. B. It was about 10 meters long.
C. It had no hard shell long ago. D. It was a kind of trilobite.
20. Which part is the “tube”?
A. A B. B C. C D. D
21. What was the difficult situation for Cameroceras after the disaster?
A. They could not find enough food. B. They lost most of their homes.
C. The water became too salty. D. They lost their front teeth.
22. How does the writer tell the story of squids?
A. By following time order. B. By following space order.
C. By showing examples. D. By asking and answering questions.
