Inside Out
Although I did not speak or understand English,I was
still excited about going to school for the first time.
On my first day of school,my teacher,Miss Scalapino
seated me closest to the window.Right next to my desk was
W港m
a caterpillar in a large jar.It moved very slowly without making any sound.Just
in front of the caterpillar was a picture book of caterpillars and butterflies.I went
through it,page by page, studying all the pictures.
When the bell rang, all the kids walked in quietly. Some of them looked at
me.Embarrassed and nervous,I looked at the caterpillar in the jar.I did this
every time someone looked at me.In class,I did not understand a word Miss
Scalapino was saying.The more she spoke,the uneasier I felt.For days I got
headaches from trying to listen.Luckily, the caterpillar brought me some
comfort.During breaks,I often stayed with it and fed it with leaves from trees on
the playground.
My favorite time in school was when we did art.I drew butterflies in pencil
and then colored them using every color in my crayon box.Miss Scalapino even
put one of my drawings up on the board for everyone to see. After a couple of
weeks it disappeared and I did not know how to ask where it had gone.
One day after classes I looked for the caterpillar but could not see it.I put my
hand in the jar and lightly moved the leaves. To my surprise, the caterpillar had
turned into a cocoon(茧),
On Wednesday,May 23,just a few days before the end of the school year,
Miss Scalapino took me by surprise. She handed me the drawing of the butterfly
that had disappeared weeks before and a silk blue ribbon that had "Ist PLACE"
printed on it in gold.I received first prize for my drawing!I was so proud that I
felt like bursting out of my skin.
That afternoon,I checked on the caterpillar.I was amazed to find a butterfly
moving from its cocoon slowly.I opened the jar.Magically, the butterfly came
out.fluttering (in the air, ready for a completely new life.

Imagine a robot. What comes to your mind first?A machine stronger thins
the human body? However, this same quality is now eausing a big problem-it's
creating tons of long-lasting e-waste that could flood our planet. What if,instead,
the machines we use were designed to break dowm and disapposr--just as living
things do?
For a study published in Science Advances, reseurehers made a robotie arm
and a controller using materials from animals and plants,These materials are
strong enough to work but can easily break down in a natural onvironment. After
testing, both parts were gone in soil within weeks.
Biodegradable(可生物降解的)robotics often falls under the umbrella of sofl
robotics, which takes ideas from nature."This field started in materials seience
and chemistry rather than traditional robots that come from mechanical (
engineering."says Florian Hartmann,a materials scientist from Germany.
However, many early soft robotics models still used man-made materials that
cause pollution.
Wei,a scientist who studies natural materials in Hangzhou, worked together
with his friend Zhang,a robotics engineer in Shanghai.to build robots for the new
study. They started with cellulose taken from cotton. Then, they added
glycerol (to make a new material that is soft and easy to change shapes.
After that they allowed it to dry so it became strong,"Cellulose is cheap and easy
to work with,"says Wei.They found that the controller and the robotic arm stood
up to both heavy use and a week of inactivity. Finally, they buried (them both
in a hole.Within eight weeks these two parts were almost completely gone.
Wei and Zhang expect that robots like these can be used to deal with
dangerous waste and then disappear naturally. They also hope that such robots can
aid doctors in operations and then safely break down inside the body.
英语第6页共12页
However,it's important to note that the technology is still in very early stages.
"If we truly want to have a biodegradable robot,"Hartmann says,"we also need
to make sure its electronics and power parts are biodegradable."
20.What is special about the robotic arm and the controller in Paragraph 2?
A.They are green.
B.They are hard.
C.They are intelligent.D.They are affordable.
21.What is mentioned in Paragraph 5 about soft robots?
A.Their operation.
B.Their applications.
C.Their challenges.
D.Their performance.
22.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Soft robots are widely used to clean up e-waste.
B.Soft robots have to rest for a week after heavy use.
C.The designing of soft robots borrows ideas from nature.
D.Mechanical engineering offers new ways to run soft robots.

I remember once asking the famous painter Elizabeth Mhirrny whas she
thought of her early works. She told me that a fow didn't quiio meet her owen mark
for what she wanted them to be.One of the works,in fhct,so didn't most bet mark,
that she had set it out in the rubbish in her studio, and her neighbor had taken it
because she saw its value. At that moment,my view of succees and creatrvity
changed.I realized that success is a moment, but what we are always celebrating
is creativity and mastery.
I started to understand this when I watehed an archer().She first hit a
seven ring, and then a nine.and then two tens, and then the next arrow didn't evem
hit the target. And I saw that gave her more tenacity, and she went after it agaio
and again. For three hours this went on.So,success is hitting that ten ring, but
mastery is knowing that it means nothing if you can't do it again and again.
Mastery is not just the same as excellence, though. It's not the same as success,
which I see as an event,a moment in time, and a title the world awards you,
Mastery is not a commitment (to a goal but to a continous search.Whul
gets us to push forward more is to value a near win.
Part of the reason that the near win is inbuilt to mastery is because the grenter
our proficiency ()the more clearly we might see that we don't know all thar
we thought we did. It's called the"Dunning-Kruger effect. The Paris Review gor
it out of James Baldwin when they asked him,"What do you think increases with
knowledge?"and he said,"You learn how little you know."
Success motivates us,but a near win can push us in an ongoing quest ()
One of the most vivid examples of this comes when we look at the difference
between Olympic silver medalists and bronze medalists after a competition
Thomas Gilovich and his team from Comell studied this difference and found that
the frustration silver medalists feel compared to bronze medalists, who are
英语第8页共12页
typically a bit happier to have just not received fourth place and not medaled at all,
gives silver medalists a focus on follow-up competition.
The reason the near win driving us forward is because it changes our view of
the landscape and puts our goals, which we tend to put at a distance, closer to
where we stand. And this is what a near win does.It gets us to focus on what, right
now,we plan to do to address that mountain in our sights.
We become, and continue to be,successful, strong and healthy not when
we've done it all, butwhen westill have more to do.We build out of the unfinished
idea, even if that idea is our former self. This is the dynamic of mastery.Coming
close to what you thought you wanted can help you achieve more than you ever
dreamed you could.Completion is a goal, but we hope it is never the end.
23.What do you know about success and mastery from the passage?
A.Most successes are driven by Dunning-Kruger effect.
B.Making every effort to win is what mastery underlines.
C.Success means going after excellence over and over again.
D.Knowing how little we know sets us on the path to mastery.
24.What does the underlined word "tenacity"in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.The wish to give up quickly.
B.The will to keep on trying.
C.The sense of being upset.
D.The joy of winning prizes.
25.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explain the true meaning of mastery.
B.To inspire people to continue reaching higher.
C.To present the benefits ofhaving the right goal.
D.To compare different ways to deal with a near win.
